Summary of Program and Position:
We believe that every child deserves bright and healthy futures. Early education plays a critical role during the important developmental period, especially among disadvantaged children. Investing in early education will have a tremendous impact on life outcomes and provide thriving futures for Hawaii’s young minds.
Federally funded initiatives provide early childhood education and related comprehensive services for low-income parents and children, and children with special needs. Early Head Start (EHS) provides services in centers and in homes to prenatal parents and parents with infants and toddlers. Head Start (HS) serves children ages three through five and their parents to provide a head start for school success.
The primary responsibility of the Preschool Teacher is implementation of an individualized and comprehensive early childhood education program for children and their families, and to provide supervision to classroom staff. This position is under the direct supervision of the Area Manager.
Essential Duties:
1. Behaves in a manner that supports the agency's mission and follows personnel policies and procedures.
2. Provides individualized and comprehensive early childhood education services in accordance with federal performance standards and current best practice in the field of early childhood education.
3. Provides leadership to classroom staff and assumes all the responsibilities of a supervisor for the staff that report directly to this position.
4. Is responsible for ensuring that all participants receive timely and appropriate developmental screenings.
5. Obtains, maintains, and coordinates the use of all physical resources available and ensures the maintenance of a safe, healthy, stimulating, developmentally appropriate learning environment that meets licensing and federal standards.
6. Is responsible for accurate and complete documentation, that all required confidentiality of consumer records is maintained, and that all procedures are in accordance with established standards.
7. Plans and conducts monthly lesson planning sessions with classroom staff members.
8. Recommends to Area Manager appropriate training and professional development opportunities for program staff and parents.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education/Training:
1. Must be at least 18 years old.
2. Must have six (6) months experience as a lead teacher in a licensed Early Childhood Education program or center PLUS one of the following:
An Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education OR related field that includes coursework equivalent to a major in ECE with experience teaching preschool-age children.
A Bachelors or advanced degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development OR related field that includes coursework equivalent to a major in ECE with experience teaching preschool-age children.
Other:
Possesses and maintains a valid driver’s license and daily access to an automobile.
Possesses and maintains proof of no-fault insurance.
Can obtain an acceptable criminal background check upon hire, one year later, and annually thereafter.
Can obtain an acceptable CWS background check. upon hire, one year later, and annually thereafter.
Can obtain an acceptable National Sex Offender Registry Check upon hire, one year later, and annually thereafter.
Successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination and TB test upon hire and as requested
