Capitol Hill Day School seeks a full-time Middle School Math teacher for 5th and 6th grades for the 2026-2027 academic year.
At Capitol Hill Day School, learning is challenging, engaging, playful, and relevant to the real world. Students learn across subjects with an experiential curriculum that integrates academic subjects and the arts, physical education, service learning, and technology. Through an extensive field education program, students take part in experiences beyond the classroom related to topics of study. Teachers collaborate in developing, planning, and implementing curriculum; school-wide, they create a spirit of camaraderie through their interactions with students, parents, and other members of the staff. Also essential to the School’s program is its commitment to diversity, ensuring that students from varying backgrounds, cultures, and learning styles learn from and with each other. Emphasis is placed on building a classroom community that respects each individual while teaching children how to become caring, engaged members of the group.
The Middle School Math program is a four-year sequence that thoughtfully and systematically helps students consolidate and deepen their learning of number and operations concepts while developing their understanding of algebraic principles, proportional reasoning, statistics, probability, and geometric thinking. Emphasis is placed on cooperative learning activities, inquiry-based lessons, and problem solving. The Math teacher collaborates with other middle school faculty to create and facilitate interdisciplinary and project-based learning opportunities. As one member of a team of four “cohort leaders,” the Math teacher serves as a student advisor and helps ensure the smooth functioning of the weekly schedule in 5th and 6th Grades.
Requirements
Master’s degree and/or experience teaching math at the middle school level; understanding of child development and progressive education pedagogy; experience using a range of strategies to differentiate instruction to meet individual student needs; commitment to working in close collaboration with professional colleagues.
