Lowell School, a progressive independent school in Washington DC, is seeking a Kindergarten Lead Teacher to join our faculty. The Kindergarten Co-Teacher is a key member of the Primary School Division Team and reports to the Primary School Director. This position, which begins in August 2026, requires a working knowledge of early and middle child development. Applicants should also have a demonstrated understanding of the social, emotional, and academic needs of elementary-aged children.
Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree or higher in elementary education or a related field
A minimum of 1 to 3 years of teaching experience
Knowledge of the social, emotional, and academic needs of elementary-age students
Well-versed in best practices for delivering language arts, mathematics, and social studies instruction, especially in project-based environments
Experience with Responsive Classroom and a commitment to progressive education
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Major Responsibilities:
Deliver social curriculum, experiential learning, social justice education, thematic teaching, and differentiated instruction.
Engage in curriculum development.
Bring ‘real life’ experiences—such as current events, information about our neighborhood and the larger city community, responsive practices, collegiality, etc.—into the classrooms and instruction.
Build and nurture genuine relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
Seek out professional development and leadership opportunities.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
Must be able to traverse school facilities and lead students to safety in the event of an emergency.
Long periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

The Expected Salary Range: $60,000 - $85,000
