POSITION SUMMARY
The Hewitt School is seeking candidates for an experienced kindergarten head teacher for the 2026-2027 school year. The head teacher is responsible for the education and support of students in a kindergarten homeroom as well as supporting the planning and execution of admissions activities, processes, and events designed to attract, enroll, and retain kindergarten students and their families.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES
Head Teaching Responsibilities
Plan and implement a rich, rigorous, cohesive, and integrated lower school curriculum in math, reading, writing, phonics/word study, social studies, and social-emotional learning
Collaborate with peers and academic team to develop interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary curricula utilizing backward design, standards-based learning, and performance-based assessment
Integrate latest educational research into the academic program in alignment with Hewitt’s mission and strategic vision
Monitor and document academic, social, and emotional progress of students in collaboration with the learning support team
Communicate student progress in written reports and during conferences with parents and guardians
Serve as the homeroom’s lead storyteller by crafting weekly newsletters and occasional email blasts to families
Conduct home visits for all incoming kindergarten students over the summer
Support admissions and retention efforts by actively participating in events including, but not limited to, open houses and student assessment sessions, which may occur after school, in the evenings, and occasionally on weekends
Foster an open-door classroom environment by welcoming and engaging prospective families on school tours
Mentor an associate teacher
Assist with supervisory duties as assigned
Admissions Responsibilities
Conduct and summarize student admissions assessments on campus and virtually
Actively engage prospective kindergarten parents/guardians when they tour our campus
Present information about kindergarten curriculum on admissions panels and during recruitment events (recruitment events may take place during the day and occasionally on weekends or evenings)
Represent Hewitt at various events both on and off campus including, but not limited to, school fairs, school visits, and presentations
Collaborate with the admissions team to warmly welcome the parents of newly accepted students to Hewitt (help with phone calls home and revisit day events)
Collaborate with the admissions team and parent ambassadors to share our Hewitt pride with prospective parents by attending spring events (during the work day) and the occasional evening Zoom panel

Demonstrated ability to utilize backwards design, learning standards, and student data in curriculum development
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Collaborative, team-focused approach to teaching and learning
Demonstrated commitment to anti-bias education and social justice
Commitment to girls’ education
High emotional intelligence and a sense of humor
Admissions Responsibilities
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills
Ability to comfortably, warmly, and effectively engage with large and small groups of adults and students
Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information
Positive energy and flexibility
Detail-oriented with strong organizational and project management skills and an ability to meet deadlines
Ability and willingness to work nights and weekends as needed

SALARY RANGE
Starting Salary Range: $65,000 to $95,000 (salary based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience and expertise)
