Summary of the Position: The Montgomery Academy has long considered its arts program to be integral to the school’s mission of developing “leaders committed to honor, scholarship, service and the pursuit of excellence.” In this position, we are searching for an educator to serve as a teacher of our theater classes and to direct our productions in the James W. Wilson Jr. Theater on our Vaughn Road Campus.
At the Middle School level, theater productions are open to students in grades 5-8. In grades 5 & 6, all students are exposed to theater through a rotating enrichment program, and students in grades 7-8 can enroll in a semester-based theater elective.
At the Upper School, theater productions are open to students in grades 9-12. In addition, students can enroll in elective theater classes which could include acting, theater production, film analysis and/or improvisational theater. In recent years, there have been three mainstage productions each year in the Wilson Theater with one production dedicated to Middle School students and at least one musical. The individual in this role will have input into how to best structure the production schedule in the future.
Ideally, an educator in this role would also be able to support our speech & debate program by teaching sections of Middle School Speech & Debate. MA’s speech & debate program is ranked in the top 1% of programs within the National Speech & Debate Association. Our program begins with a foundational class in 7th and 8th grades, introducing students to the core components of public speaking, oral interpretation of literature and debate.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Demonstrate a joy for theater throughout the MA community by recruiting and retaining a wide variety of students at multiple grade levels
Teach sections of theater in the Middle School and Upper School
Teach sections of speech/debate classes in the Middle School (preferred)
Direct productions in the Middle and Upper School for the community in the fall and spring
Prepare individual students and groups for district and state level theater opportunities such as the state Trumbauer festival
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Theater, Theater Education, Theater Studies, Drama, Dramatic Arts, or related field (advanced degree preferred)
Ability to work with students at varied age and skill levels
Characteristics:
Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills with a calm, patient and professional demeanor
Comfortable in directing a variety of dramatic genres with a wide age range of performers possessing a wide variety of experience levels
Has a passion for personal professional development
Desire to work with children in grades 5-12 with an understanding of their developmental differences.
