Duke School offers an exceptional learning experience. With an emphasis on inquiry, students explore science and social studies topics through a project-based approach. Instruction in reading, writing, and math is delivered through a workshop model. This engaging and rigorous environment challenges students to forge their own paths to learning. Duke School comprises grades preschool - eight. Each grade in the elementary division has two classrooms. Two highly qualified teachers work collaboratively with 22-24 students in each class.
We are seeking a school counselor who possesses a unique blend of warmth, patience, and creativity to begin in August 2024. The ideal candidate will have a Masters in Counseling, Masters in Social Work with focus on child mental health or Masters in Psychology specializing in children. The ideal candidate is someone who is knowledgeable about child development and can provide support and guidance to help children navigate social and emotional challenges. They will collaborate closely with teachers and parents to create a supportive network around the child, and they will advocate for the needs of each student to ensure they have the resources they need to thrive.

Masters in Counseling, Masters in Social Work with focus on child mental health or Masters in Psychology specializing in children
3-5 years of experience with early childhood and elementary school-age children is preferred
Demonstrated experience and competence in a culturally diverse community including diversity of race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, language, family structure, sexual orientation, and gender identity
Familiarity or experience with integrating classroom management and social emotional learning practices in classrooms
Strong collaboration and facilitation skills with adults
Demonstrated effectiveness in facilitation of individual and small group counseling work with children
Experience in managing documentation and processes for support and learning plans.
Duke School, located in Durham, N.C., offers an exceptional project-based learning environment in which it seeks to develop high levels of analytical and critical thinking skills among all of its students. This engaging process is fully integrated with explicit instruction in the workshop based academic disciplines of reading, language arts, mathematics, science, social sciences, and world languages. The program is further enriched by additional opportunities in Spanish, the fine arts, and physical education. The lower school at DS is comprised of a preschool for 3-4 year olds, kindergarten, and grades 1-4, with each grade enrolling approximately 45 students. The majority of students are drawn from the communities of Durham and Chapel Hill. Compensation and benefits are competitive with the local public school system.
