Job Summary: The Direct Care Supervisor is responsible for supervision of Direct Care Workers assigned to a specific shift.
Additional Department Summary: This position also provides individualized and group services to youth. The youth placed in the program are involuntary clients screened for placement in this specialized program. Therefore, the Direct Care Worker Shift Supervisor must utilize therapeutic skills and techniques learned during employee orientation and ongoing training to engage youth in daily educational and extracurricular activities. This individual is responsible for the care of youth within a self contained residential treatment program for emotionally disturbed female juvenile offenders located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The program is a 16 bed program that is administered by the Youth Services Institute through a management agreement with the Alabama Department of Youth Services. Through modeling appropriate behavior management skills the Direct Care Worker Shift Supervisor will assist youth with social interaction, social development, and program adjustment. Due to the challenges presented by this population this person will supervise the daily activities of program youth and provide interventions that reinforce treatment.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in social work, counseling, psychology, human development and family studies, criminal justice, nursing or education and one year of therapeutic, rehabilitative, or behavior management experience OR High School Diploma/GED and five years of therapeutic, rehabilitative, or behavior management experience.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Ability to learn and apply various behavioral techniques related to the care and rehabilitation of adolescent females.
Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.
Must be able to work outside of normal hours, which may include nights and/or weekends, and be available for travel within the state of Alabama.
Applicant must demonstrate use of sound judgment and ability to remain calm during a crisis. Must be able to perform physical crisis intervention techniques, including, but not limited to, restraint of students using Control Tactics methods.
Skills and Knowledge: Proficiency in the operation of a personal computer is required. Effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary. Ability to work with diverse populations is mandatory.
Preferred Qualifications: Coursework in child development and experience which includes work with delinquent youth is preferred.
