Overview The MGH Institute of Health Professions invites nominations and applications for the chairperson of the Department of Physician Assistant (PA) Studies within the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. The department is home to the Institute's Master of PA Studies (MPAS) program, which combines didactic and clinical education with a special focus on interprofessional education and practice.
Since its founding, our MPAS program has been taught utilizing an innovative team-based learning pedagogy, that has attracted highly qualified students. Team-based learning (TBL) is an active learning and teaching approach that includes prework, individual and team assessments, and application exercises with immediate feedback. TBL develops critical thinking, fosters effective team building, and helps students hone soft skills like empathy and giving and receiving feedback. Our faculty, students, and graduates are making their mark on the profession and the communities they serve regionally, nationally, and around the world.
This Leadership Opportunity The chair will join a team of dedicated faculty leaders within the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS) team from highly ranked masters and doctoral programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Genetic Counseling, Audiology, and a PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences. The successful candidate will be a champion for interprofessional education and practice as well as diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education and healthcare. The chair has a key role in developing and maintaining important relationships within the Mass General Brigham health system and across regional clinical affiliate institutions and community partners. The chair will report to the Dean of SHRS and will mentor and develop faculty at various stages of their academic careers and scholarship. Opportunities abound for collaboration in teaching, scholarship, and service within SHRS and across the Institute. To illustrate spaces for collaboration, the Institute's IMPACT Practice Center is a comprehensive care delivery program that connects members of the community with evidence-based approaches to health and wellness, child development, chronic care, and recovery. The IPC is led by IHP faculty and students and offers care to members of our community in need.
The MGH Institute of Health Professions is an independent, not-for-profit graduate school and is the only degree-granting affiliate of the Mass General Brigham System (MGB). The Institute is regionally accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education. MGB is an integrated health system and includes nationally and globally renowned academic health centers, hospitals, and research centers, such as the Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Spaulding Rehabilitation Network, and Massachusetts Eye and Ear. The MGH Institute is comprised of three schools, including Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Nursing, and Healthcare Leadership as well as numerous research centers and innovative scientific programs in translational research.
The chair is responsible for all aspects of department leadership and administration, including, either directly or by delegation, the following:
Department Leadership
Collaborate with faculty, students, and staff to establish and maintain a long-term vision for the department that is consistent with the school, institute, and health system
Serve as a liaison between the department and other units of the institution
Ensure adherence to department and institutional policies as well as relevant laws, regulations, and accreditation standards
Initiate new academic programs and projects
Department Curriculum
Oversee curriculum development and revisions for department education and training
Review and assess department educational programs and professional development offerings
Assess education outcomes in core courses taught within the department
Engage in data-driven continuous quality improvement
Department Operations
Direct department operations related to education, research, and service
Lead department faculty and staff and assign workloads
Oversee the department's fiscal operations and budget management
Review and update department policies, procedures, and website
Guide audit, program evaluation, and quality assurance activities
Personnel
Recruit, appoint, and supervise department faculty
Advance department diversity and inclusion
Evaluate faculty and staff performance
Support and oversee the overall development of the department faculty and staff
Recruit, appoint, and supervise department staff and graduate assistants/interns
Receive and evaluate faculty and staff grievances within the department
Students
Recruit and retain students in the department's programs
Coordinate student advising and reviews of degree progress
Evaluate student transfer credit
Review student academic appeals and grievances
Faculty Responsibilities
Participate in departmental teaching and/or student advisement
Engage in research and scholarly activities
Serve in department, school, institute, and community service activities
Represent the department in regional, national, or global service roles related to the discipline
Qualifications Qualifications:
Required
Terminal academic degree for discipline* (e.g., master's degree for PA; MD, DO, MBBS for physician)
Substantial experience in PA/medical education
Licensed or eligible for licensure to practice in Massachusetts**
Track record of accomplishment in higher education administration
Experience with academic program and clinical education partnership development
Experience with regional and programmatic accreditation
Consistent record of scholarship and service
Preferred
*An earned doctorate relevant to higher education or healthcare (e.g., PhD, EdD, DrPH, etc.) is preferred
**National certification (e.g., NCCPA, ABMS) is preferred
The position is a 12-month appointment, with rank and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
