OVERVIEW The Lower School (LS) Learning Support Specialist reports to the Head of Lower School and works closely with students, faculty, parents, and administrators to support the learning needs of students. They guide the divisional transition for students with learning differences from Lower School to Middle School (Grade 5 to Grade 6). To that end, the LS Learning Support Specialist will liaise with the MS Learning Support team. They are also an integral member of the LS Leadership Team, collaborating with the Head of Lower School, Assistant Head of Lower School, and the LS Counselor.
The LS Learning Support Specialist reviews student assessment results and assists with interpreting and disseminating necessary information to classroom teachers. Likewise, they assist with monitoring students’ academic progress and parent communications. The LS Learning Support Specialist serves as a liaison between the LS Literacy Specialists and classroom teachers, ensuring that relevant student information, progress, and strategies are effectively communicated.
QUALIFICATIONS • Master’s degree in special education, diagnostic interpretations, educational therapy, or closely related field • 3+ years of experience with interpreting and applying accommodations from the results of psycho-educational assessments • Highly knowledgeable in best practices of instruction, differentiation, and assessment • Experience facilitating a learning or academic support program • In-depth knowledge of learning differences, including dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and ADHD • Highly knowledgeable of child development with an expertise in needs unique to Lower school-age students; experience with students in grades PK - 5 preferred • Experience administering and interpreting academic screeners • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills with teachers, parents, and administrators • Commitment to confidentiality and professional ethics • Proficient with educational technology platforms
RESPONSIBILITES • Provide and monitor academic support for students in grades PK-5 • Design learning support plans for students targeting their specific learning needs • Administer academic screeners to identify areas of need and guide next steps in support • Coordinate intervention services with therapists, managing caseloads, and monitoring ongoing progress • Meet with families and oversee transition of students with learning differences from Lower School to Middle School (Grade 5 to Grade 6) • Support and guide faculty by providing resources and training to accommodate students with learning differences • Interpret evaluation results • Help students develop effective learning strategies that promote academic improvement • Support and educate parents about the student’s learning differences • Recommend support/services that may include diagnostic evaluations, tutors, therapists, and other referrals for outside professionals • Organize and oversee standardized testing within the Lower School
