POSITION SUMMARY
The Hewitt School seeks a dynamic, innovative, and passionate part-time after-school debate team coach for the 2025–2026 school year. The after-school debate team coach will report to the head of middle school. The successful candidate will inspire budding debaters, foster critical thinking, and create an inclusive environment where students feel empowered to find their voices.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide after-school coaching for the debate team from 3:30–4:45 pm, Monday through Thursday
Prepare students to participate in local weekend tournaments (approximately once per month)
Accompany students to tournaments and provide active, supportive coaching during competitions
Organize tournament logistics, including communication with debate leagues, scheduling, arranging for parent training, and coordinating volunteer judges
Establish and maintain rules, procedures, and routines that support a safe, inclusive, and respectful team culture
Communicate regularly with families about team progress, upcoming events, and volunteer opportunities
Collaborate with fellow faculty and staff to align debate activities with the School’s broader academic and student life goals
Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion as a core value of the debate program and the broader school community
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Demonstrated commitment to anti-bias education and social justice
High school diploma or equivalent
Knowledge of child development, classroom management, and best practices in middle school education
Strong understanding of current trends in debate education, competitions, and public speaking
Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to foster a learning environment that is challenging, motivating, and developmentally appropriate
Commitment to collaboration, creativity, and building an inclusive team culture
QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED
Bachelor’s degree
Previous experience with debate teams, public speaking forums, or competitive speech programs strongly preferred
Inquiry-based pedagogy
Culturally responsive approach to teaching
Proficient with Mac platforms; comfortable with technology or demonstrated ability to learn quickly
Commitment to student life
SALARY RANGE
Stipend Range: $10,000 (stipend based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience and expertise)
