The Woods Academy is seeking a dedicated and versatile Permanent Substitute Teacher to join our team on a full-time basis.

The school serves approximately 300 students in the Washington DC, Metropolitan area, including Montgomery County, Maryland, Northern Virginia, and the District of Columbia. The school provides a comprehensive education for children from age three to grade eight with strong academics, a daily world language program, hands-on technology instruction, and a well-rounded arts program, all conducted in a small classroom setting.
The Permanent Substitute Teacher plays a crucial role in ensuring continuity of instruction and a stable learning environment for our students during the absence of their regular classroom teacher. The Permanent Substitute Teacher will report to the school daily and will be prepared to instruct students across various grade levels and subject areas as needed. In addition to classroom teaching responsibilities, this individual may be assigned other duties to support the smooth operation of the school day. The Permanent Substitute Teacher is an hourly role, offering a pay range of $23.00 to $28.85 per hour for 40 hours per week during the school year. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Classroom Instruction
Deliver engaging and effective instruction to students at all levels, following the lesson plans provided by the absent regular classroom teacher.
In cases of extended absences, may be required to develop or adapt lesson plans in collaboration with school administration or grade-level teams to ensure continued academic progress.
Utilize a variety of instructional strategies to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
Clearly communicate learning objectives and instructions to students.
Classroom Management
Establish and maintain a positive, respectful, and orderly classroom environment conducive to learning.
Implement school-approved classroom management techniques and disciplinary procedures as needed.
Ensure the safety and well-being of students at all times.
Student Support & Supervision
Provide guidance and support to students, fostering a supportive and inclusive classroom atmosphere.
Supervise students in various school settings, which may include classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, playground, and during assemblies or field trips, as assigned.
Address student inquiries and provide assistance as appropriate.
Administrative & Other Duties
Accurately record student attendance as per school policy.
Organize and distribute classroom materials, assignments, and tests.
Maintain clear and concise records for the regular teacher regarding student progress, behavior, and any issues that arose during the day.
Collaborate and communicate effectively with teachers, administrators, and other school staff.
Become familiar with and adhere to all school policies, procedures, and emergency protocols.
Perform other related duties as assigned by school administration. This may include, but is not limited to, assisting in the library or office, covering study halls, providing academic support to small groups of students, or assisting with school events when not actively substituting in a classroom.
Participate in professional development opportunities as required.
Qualification Requirements
Bachelor’s degree or in pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree is required. A bachelor’s degree in education, child development, or a related field is preferred.
Teaching experience in an elementary school setting is preferred.
