Dwight-Englewood Lower School is a place where faculty encourage children to embrace every aspect of childhood development and play, while paying close attention to each students’ academic growth and progress. Grade-levels range from Preschool 3 through Grade 5.
Dwight-Englewood encourages faculty to practice both the art and science of teaching. Our faculty understand the importance of balancing explicit instruction with more open-ended inquiry, and they bring this perspective to their planning and work with students. In addition, faculty understand the importance of observing and assessing students both formally and informally in all subject areas and throughout the day in order to plan instruction for whole groups, small groups and individuals. The Position:
Dwight-Englewood Lower School is seeking a dynamic and experienced Lower School Division Administrator. The Lower School Assistant Principals are primarily responsible for supporting excellence in academic programs, facilitating curriculum development and supervision among faculty members, promoting the academic and social-emotional progress of the students, partnering with parents, and addressing student behavior.

Primary Responsibilities:
Support and model the spirit of the Mission and Foundation Documents of the Dwight-Englewood School in work with students, faculty, parents and community members.
Demonstrate knowledge of, and experience with, the developmental, social, emotional and cognitive milestones within the primary grades.
Demonstrate a strong understanding of adult development and collaboration using skills related to presenting, facilitating, coaching and consulting.
Demonstrate effective coaching skills through individual and grade-level support of teachers, helping to grow instructional practices.
Specific Duties:
Manage, with the Administrative Team, the daily running of the division
Supervise faculty and staff in accordance with established procedures
Research curricular programs and professional development projects as determined by the Lower School Principal
Work with learning specialists and faculty to develop and deliver vertically coordinated curriculum and meet the needs of the full range of students
Collaborate with colleagues in building the LS program over time, including collaborative work in social studies, innovation, and other modes of integrated learning
Perform supervisory duties that include, but are not limited to, recess, lunch and dismissal supervision
Communicate with families about student academic and behavioral progress, goals, and benchmarks respectfully, openly and showing an ability to ask questions and listen with empathy.
Collaborate with members of the Lower School Student Support Team to support referrals as well as review and implement evaluation plans.
Other duties as assigned by the Lower School Principal
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
Advanced degree in Elementary Education, and/or Special Education required
Experience with, and a commitment to, diversity and equity work with young children
Experience teaching in a Lower School setting
Understanding of child development, curriculum expectations and benchmarks, for a range of learners
Familiarity with interpreting the data garnered from a range of formal and informal assessments
Flexibility, strong communication skills and ability to be a collaborative team leader in the division and across the School generally
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
Knowledge of and experience in curriculum development, including emerging paradigms, pedagogy and methods in early childhood programs and elementary school
Strong organizational and written and verbal communication skills
Terms of Employment:
This is an administrative position spanning 12 months.
Eight-hour workdays as well as attendance at faculty meetings and other school-wide meetings and events that may occur on evenings and weekends.
Professional days are considered workdays and participation in planned activities is mandatory.
