Position Overview The Primary School Learning Support Coordinator works alongside all stakeholders in both the Early Learning Campus and Lower School to improve outcomes for students with additional learning and support needs. The Learning Support Coordinator leads the Student Review Team and works closely with the external providers, counselors, administration, homeroom teachers, and health staff to ensure all students are supported. The Learning Support Coordinator leads the coordination of student support plans by designing accommodations aligned to best practices and recommendations from external specialists. The position is responsible for improving the quality of learning outcomes for students by providing teaching and learning best practices within the framework of Awty’s mission, vision, core values, and learning principles. The ideal candidate is a passionate educator with a strong understanding of child development, special education, and effective teaching strategies.
Minimum Requirements:
BA or equivalent in Special Education, Elementary Education, or related field
At least five years of full-time teaching experience
Native-speaker proficiency in English
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in special education (or related field)
International and/or independent school experience
International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP) experience
Certification in elementary education and/or related subject area
Bilingual (or highly proficient) in French or Spanish
Experience leading student review processes or support plan implementation across divisions
Demonstrated digital proficiency in current tools and platforms (electronic gradebooks, Learning Management Systems, online learning platforms, digital portfolios, AI-assisted technology, etc.)
Possesses excellent teaching skills and pedagogy
Be well-versed in current research and best practices in teaching and learning
Demonstrate understanding of, and commitment to, childhood social, emotional, and intellectual development within an international school setting
Be prepared to coach teachers in the implementation of effective learning support strategies and accommodations
Expectations:
Work collaboratively with the classroom teacher to support assessment for learning of students with additional educational needs and to identify specific learning support needs
Identify specific learning support needs through analysis of assessment, referring to classroom performance, formal assessment, informal assessments, screening, psychological assessments, and recommendations
Plan, implement, model, monitor, and evaluate teaching practices for students with additional learning support needs
Plan, implement, model, monitor, and evaluate personalized adjustments for learning where required, with the classroom teacher, student, and parent/guardian
Model exemplary practice when tailoring adjusted learning programs for students with additional learning needs
Maintain documentation for each student receiving additional learning support, including meeting notes and follow-up communication with parents and staff
Provide direct intervention support for students with additional learning needs through a range of strategies (including direct instruction, delivery of adjusted learning programs, assessment, and monitoring of progress)
Collect and analyze data to monitor student progress and program effectiveness
Use data to inform decision-making and program improvement
Provide professional specialist advice, support, and mentoring to classroom teachers on: how best to cater for the diverse learning needs in their classrooms; and how to effectively work in partnership with families to maximize learning opportunities for students at school and at home
Design and facilitate professional learning for classroom teachers to address current trends in necessary supports to ensure consistent implementation of interventions and supports
Ensure the safety and well-being of all students in accordance with Awty’s administrative policies and divisional procedures
Communicate regularly with parents about student progress and concerns
Build strong relationships with parents and involve them in their child's education
Organize parent-teacher conferences and other opportunities for parent involvement
Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in education
Attend and positively contribute to grade, faculty, division, and all-school meetings as necessary
Supervise students during lunch, recess, morning arrival, afternoon dismissal, and other non-instructional times
Assist with school-wide initiatives and events
Maintain accurate records and documentation
Adhere to school policies and procedures
