Duke School offers an exceptional preschool-eight learning experience through a project-based approach. Through inquiry and research, students are actively engaged in projects and topics that are relevant and meaningful to them. Early literacy, math skills, science, and social studies are designed to be learned in an interdisciplinary way and in a workshop model in kindergarten. Social-emotional learning and development as well as the values of inclusion and diversity in our community are hallmarks of the school. This constructivist educational environment allows students to forge their own paths to learning. 

Early Childhood consists of Preschool and Kindergarten. Our Preschool (mixed age 3&4s) has four classrooms, and our Kindergarten has three cohorts. Two highly qualified teachers work collaboratively with 16-17 students in each class. 

We seek an exceptional early childhood/early elementary teacher with a sound understanding of best practices in teaching and child development to begin in August 2025. 

The ideal candidate will have an early childhood and/or elementary education degree and at least three years of teaching experience. Commitment to the academic and social/emotional growth of students is essential. Working collaboratively with a teaching partner is critical for this position.

Duke School, located in Durham, N.C., offers an exceptional project-based learning environment in which it seeks to develop high levels of analytical and critical thinking skills among all of its students. This engaging process is fully integrated with explicit instruction in the workshop based academic disciplines of reading, language arts, mathematics, science, social sciences, and world languages. This engaging, unique, yet rigorous approach to educating K-8th students is implemented by a collaborative team of two teachers in each classroom at every grade level. The program is further enriched by additional opportunities in Spanish, the fine arts, and physical education. The lower school at DS is comprised of a preschool for 3-4 year olds, kindergarten, and grades 1-4, with each grade enrolling approximately 45 students.
