The primary purpose of this 9-month non- tenure track position is to support undergraduate education and training in animal and equine science. The essential duties and responsibilities are to: Work collaboratively with Department faculty to grow the equine program and coordinate the Equine certificate; provide undergraduate academic advising and advise program-related extracurricular clubs; Foster a sense of belonging among all students; participate in recruitment, assessment and retention efforts; Help expand the network within the equine industry to benefit programs, student experiences and employment opportunities; Attend department meetings and other university events, as applicable; Performs other duties assigned by the Department that support the mission and strategic goals of the department, college and university.

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is a premier land grant university producing the largest number of African American graduates in agriculture and second in Animal Sciences. The appointee will have access to a range of animal and infrastructure resources including the laboratory animal resource facility, the farm, and various research laboratories. Through federally and state funded Agricultural Research and Cooperative Extension Programs, the college is positioned to not only conduct research, but also to deliver the research outcomes to all citizens of North Carolina and specifically to resource limited farmers and their communities.
CAES offers 9 BS degrees, 3 MS degrees and 1 PhD and educates over 1100 students. BS degrees include: Agricultural and Environmental Systems, Agricultural Education, Animal Science, Biological Engineering, Child Development and Family Studies, Family and Consumer Sciences, Food and Nutritional Sciences, Laboratory Animal Science and Landscape Architecture. The graduate programs include MS in Agricultural Education, MS in Agricultural and Environmental Systems and MS in Food and Nutritional Sciences, and the new interdisciplinary PhD in Agriculture and Environmental Sciences with 5 concentrations, including an animal science specialization track.
About the Department of Animal Sciences:
The Department of Animal Sciences is the only Department of Animal Sciences among the 1890 Land- grant institutions and produces the second highest number of African Americans that go on to pursue the D.V.M in the United States. The department boast one of highest student first-year retention rates on campus, displaying the importance placed upon student success. The Department offers a Bachelor of Science Degrees in Animal Science, Animal Science (Animal Industry concentration), and Laboratory Animal Science, and undergraduate certificates in biotechnology and equine management. The Department also hosts two graduate programs: Master of Science in Agricultural and Environmental Systems, with a concentration in Integrated Animal Health Systems and the recently established Ph.D. in Agricultural and Environmental Systems, Animal Sciences concentration.
The department's instruction and research are supported by a 64,000 square foot, 2 story facility, the Department of Animal Sciences accommodates modern instructional classrooms, teaching laboratories and faculty research laboratories. The first floor includes a 12,000 square foot environmentally controlled laboratory animal resource unit It is also supported by an excellent beef, poultry, swine, dairy, small ruminants, and equine facilities at the university farm. These extended laboratory opportunities, located as part of the University's farm complex, help to further enhance research capabilities and practical demonstrations for agricultural teaching, research and extension activities.
Requirements:
Master's degree in animal science with an equine focus (lecturer candidates);
Ability to teach hands-on basic equine barn management skills including barn safety, basic horse handling and care, feeding practices, grooming, stall maintenance and waste management
At least on year experience with teaching equine science, animal science or related fields Demonstrated knowledge of the equine industry including business management, facility design and management;
Preferred:
·Two or more years of experience with teaching courses related to horse confirmation and selection, horse husbandry, breeding, and nutrition, training and behavior, and equine facilities management.
Ability to take vital signs, restraint of horses, lameness assessment, first aid and lunging
Demonstrates specialized knowledge and maintains expertise in the theory, skills, and pedagogy of the applicable discipline or profession
Ability to demonstrate cultural competence within the scope of the land grant mission.
Uses strategies and skills necessary to support student learning and prepares and delivers current and relevant course material in an understandable and motivating manner
Continually assesses course objectives and instructional methods to improve teaching and learning
Uses formative and summative assessments of student learning within assigned courses to inform instruction and improve student attainment of course objectives and program outcomes
Engages and communicates with students in a way that promotes their learning
