Under the supervision of the Head of the School and Redwood's Athletic Director, the PE teacher is responsible for teaching physical education to students in grades PK-8. An ideal PE teacher has the ability to design learning experiences that promote physical activity for preschool, elementary and middle school students. A Redwood PE teacher would lead students through a journey to develop the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary for a lifetime of activity. PE teachers must be capable of adjusting their curricula to adapt to children with differing abilities.
A Redwood PE teacher should also be capable of coaching sports teams, including facilitating team registration, locating competition options, coaching teams of elementary and middle school students in a variety of sports, and finding and supporting additional coaches when necessary.
The PE teacher must be able to lead, manage, and maintain an effective learning environment. They must be able to communicate, demonstrate, and instruct students using a variety of instructional practices and have knowledge of current best practice in childhood and adolescent physical education. Knowledge and implementation of positive discipline in PE classes is required. Further, it is expected the PE teacher will work with school staff, faculty, and community to promote physical activity and a positive climate for movement.
Candidates must be able to teach during the school day and coordinate after school athletics programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop, implement and assess a dynamic physical education program
Use a variety of methods, materials and techniques to teach physical education
Organize classroom systems and procedures to ensure all students are fully engaged in learning
Maintain an organized and inquiry-based program
Manage PE classes utilizing the principles of Positive Discipline

QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in education with an emphasis in physical education, Master’s degree in education preferred
Minimum 2 years’ experience teaching PE, preferably in an independent school
Familiarity with the philosophy of the school (amongst other things an inquiry-based approach to education in a non-competitive atmosphere), and an understanding of progressive education will be an asset
Skills in creating documentation and portfolios, and the ability to maintain accurate records
Experience or familiarity with anti bias and inclusive curriculum
Strong skills in supporting social-emotional growth and facilitating conflict resolution with students, and being in respectful partnership with families
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in child development and educational practices
