Classification Summary: This class is the first level in the Child Care series. Incumbents assist the Teacher in developing and implementing activities and lesson plans, observing developmental progress, and ensuring an appropriate environment for the children. Responsibilities may include directing childrens activities, communicating with parents about their childs/childrens day on a daily basis; and planning and implementing lessons according to the developmental level of the children.
Minimum Education and/or Training and Experience: Completion of six (6) college-credit hours required; specifically in early childhood, child development, youth development, and/or child/family-related courses preferred. Six (6) months experience required. Completion of nine (9) college-credit hours preferred.
Preferred Education and/or Training and Experience:
Licensing Requirements: First Aid/CPR certification preferred.
Classification Duties: 1. Assist Teacher in the development of curriculum and implement appropriate activities to advance all areas of the childrens development and learning. (A1) 2. Assist Teacher in establishing positive, respectful relationships with all children to foster development. Observe and respond to the individual childs needs and potential, as well as to those of the group. (A1) 3. Assist the Teacher in establishing positive, supportive relationships with families. (A1) 4. Monitor indoor and outdoor space daily for health and safety concerns. Recognize and report signs of child abuse/neglect as specified in the Jefferson College Child Development Center staff handbook and as mandated by law. (A1) 5. Assist Teacher in collecting assessment information (e.g. Portfolio assessment and written observations) used to drive developmentally appropriate, intentional teaching practices. (A1) 6. Ensure that mealtime is a pleasant learning experience. (A1) 7. Model developmentally appropriate practices for teaching aides, volunteers and teacher education students. (A1) 8. Attend staff meetings, in-service training, workshops, and special activities as directed. (A1) 9. Perform other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.
