The Child Development Lab (CDL) is a relationship-based program that requires its teaching team members to build foundational trusting, caring and respectful relationships. The Early Childhood Assistant Teacher position works cooperatively and collaboratively supporting the classroom teacher, other CDL staff, parents, college students, and researchers to carry out the mission of the CDL program.
The Assistant Teacher is responsible for collaborating with the teacher to provide a safe, healthy, and nurturing environment for the children in the classroom and ensures all licensing and accreditation standards are met. This includes being able to supervise children by sight and sound at all times.
The Assistant Teacher is responsible for assisting the teacher to create and carry out developmentally appropriate and culturally-relevant curriculum and assist with on-going developmental assessment to aid in preparing the classroom environment, further developing curriculum and to assist with meeting group and individual child needs.
The Assistant Teacher positively guides children's behavior and supports and assists the teacher in meeting the social and emotional, cognitive, language, and physical needs and goals of the group as well as individual children within the group, including children with developmental delays or disabilities and/or children with challenging behaviors. The Assistant Teacher supports the teacher in supervising college students placed in the classroom, assists with modeling and training for student staff, and follows all WI Department of Children and Families group childcare licensing regulations and all CDL policies and procedures.
This position requires the following physical abilities: Sensory: Ability to supervise a group of children through both sight and sound. Mobility: Ability to sit on floor and get up and down with ease; run, jump and climb hills and step stools; and reach overhead to retrieve items on shelves above shoulder level. Walk up and down stairs. Strength: Ability to lift at least 35 pounds and ability to carry this weight across a classroom; engage in vigorous outdoor and large motor play for at least 30 minutes; and push/pull at least 3 children in stroller, wagon, and evacuation crib. Move/push classroom furniture as needed. Speed: Ability to perform physical tasks within a time frame commensurate with needs of fast-paced classroom. Quick reaction time (i.e., respond instantly to unexpected needs). This position also requires that the Teacher actively participate in outdoor activities with the children on a daily basis in all types of weather.
|Responsibilities: ||Assists with curriculum preparation, classroom facilitation, and student monitoring to ensure safety and foster an environment of learning and development. Interacts regularly with parents. |
- 25% Assists with the planning and facilitation of classroom programming and classroom coordination and organization for a early childhood education facility according to established curriculums
- 30% Maintains the safety and physical well-being of children in a designated classroom
- 10% Updates and organizes individualized and developmental educational plans for children
- 10% Assists with basic technical and administrative classroom support
- 15% Documents effective communication with internal and external stakeholders to relay pertinent information and provide updates of child activities per established guidelines and regulations
- 10% Assists with ongoing child assessment including: completing child observation and data collection, screening, assessments, and developmental summaries for individual children.

|Qualifications: || |
Qualified candidates must possess:
- Experience working with children under the age of 8 years.
- Experience assisting with management of groups of children.
- Experience assisting with or basic knowledge of developmentally-appropriate ECE curriculum planning and assessment.
Well qualified candidates will possess:
- One year of experience assisting with managing routines in a group, regulated childcare setting with children 0-6 years of age.
- Ability to maintain patience, flexibility, and a calm demeanor in the management of daily classroom routines and child behaviors.
- A commitment to the research, teaching, and outreach mission of the Child Development Lab.
- A commitment to ensuring an inclusive work environment and treating everyone with respect, kindness, and dignity.
- Ability to communicate effectively with the CDL team, parents, students, and external stakeholders.
- A commitment to continuing education that allows the teacher to stay up-to-date with current evidence-based practices in working with young children of all abilities.

The CDL is open 7:30 AM-5:30 PM M-F, hours will vary within this time dependent upon staff needs of the program.

The starting hourly rate for this position is listed as $20.00 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications. A yearly Criminal and Caregiver Background Check and fingerprinting will be performed. A TB test and health examination is required not more than 12 months prior to or 30 days after the first day of employment. A CPR certificate (including training in infant and child CPR, and training in AED) must be on file within 6 months of the first day of work. Abusive Head Trauma Prevention training and training in Mandated Reporting of Child Abuse are required and can be provided by CDL staff during orientation
The Child Development Lab (CDL) is a unique early care and education program for young children 0-6 years of age that also provides a teaching and research laboratory setting for university students, faculty and staff. The CDL is state-licensed and accredited by the City of Madison and the National Early Childhood Program Accreditation. The CDL is located in a state-of-the-art teaching and research facility on the beautiful UW-Madison campus in the School of Human Ecology. The CDL is licensed for 87 children and offers year-round programming. The CDL's tripartite mission is: (1) to provide UW students with supervised training opportunities associated with their course of study; (2) to provide a population and a setting in which UW faculty and students can conduct research on issues related to child development, early learning and family studies; and (3) to engage in outreach activities, such as hosting professionals and scholars from around the world, serving on committees, providing continuing education to other teachers in the community and helping to organize community service projects. The CDL has provided excellence in early childhood education, research, and teacher training for young children since its inception in 1926.
