St. Bernard’s School is a K-9 independent boys’ school founded in 1904. The school, located on the Upper East Side, serves a diverse community of approximately 350 students and 100 faculty members.
St. Bernard’s offers young boys of diverse backgrounds an exceptionally thorough, rigorous, and enjoyable introduction to learning and community life. St. Bernard’s is seeking experienced classroom teachers who are available to serve as substitute teachers. The ideal candidate will be familiar with St. Bernard’s community and will have a flexible schedule. We would provide substitute teachers with as much advance notice as possible.
The ideal candidate will also be familiar with hands-on teaching practices, have relevant experience with elementary and middle school students, and the ability to teach multiple subjects.
The typical working day is:
Junior School: 7:45 am to 3:15 pm Monday through Thursday; and 7:45 am to 12:45 pm on Friday. This division serves grades K-3.
Middle School: 8 am to 3:20 pm Monday through Thursday; and 8 am to 2:20 pm on Friday. This division serves grades 4-6.
Upper School: 8 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Thursday; and 8 am to 2:30 pm on Friday. This division serves grades 7-9.
Responsibilities:
Support the academic program by covering classes in a teacher’s absence
Supervise students
Help transition students from one activity to another
Supervise lunch distribution as needed
Maintain appropriate records, such as attendance.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of child development, best practices, and current trends in education
Solid classroom management skills
Creativity and innovation
Solid interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
Skilled in creating a learning environment that is challenging, motivating, and age-appropriate.
Qualifications
Experience working with children in grades K-9
Experience working in a team; supervisory experience preferred
High energy and enthusiastic
Desire and ability to learn quickly
Warmth, humor, flexibility, and optimism are appreciated
Experience understanding and relating to families of diverse backgrounds.
