Title:Lower School Counselor Job Status: Full-time beginning in the 2023-24 school year; Exempt year-round position
'Iolani School is seeking an additional Lower School Counselor beginning in the 2023-24 school year.
The ideal candidate must demonstrate a passion for working with and supporting the growth and development of elementary aged students (ages 4-12). The ability to inspire and support our students in the development of their social, emotional, and learning development are essential qualities. They will be responsible to provide behavioral, social, personal, and academic support counseling and guidance to students by meeting with individual students on a one-on-one basis and facilitating work with student groups based on needs such as challenges related to making and maintaining friendships, navigating transitions, grief and loss, and other topics of student need. These meetings may arise from faculty, staff, and/or parent requests in conjunction with the counselor’s observations and input. They will also work with counseling team to develop and implement school-wide, grade level, group, and individual behavioral support programs as well as co-teach health education, life skills curriculum, and guidance lessons in a classroom setting. Additionally, they will support the further implementation and growth of our Lower School Social Emotional Learning Program.
The ability to initiate and establish a good rapport with students, families, and faculty is a skill that is key to the position. In addition to working with students, the counselor will provide parent education on topics of interest and serve as a resource for and liaison to parents as well as health care professionals. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate strong and effective communication, organizational, and collaboration skills, and will assist the counseling team and faculty in their work to organize and participate in various activities that contribute to the effective operation of the school. The ideal candidate will be self-directed and proactive in the meeting and conferring with other school counselors, the school’s Director of Social and Emotional Health, the Lower School administrators, and faculty on a regular basis about individual student needs.
Demonstration of good judgment and strong leadership skills are desirable as the counselor will participate as a member of various Lower School leadership teams and roles. In addition to being active participants in our vibrant learning community, we are looking for those who are committed to ongoing professional growth within their discipline and practice. They will represent ‘Iolani School at appropriate conferences and workshops and share the information obtained from these sources along with their own independent learning with the parents, faculty, and administration as needed.
An ideal candidate has a strong understanding of child development theory and practice, behavioral intervention strategies, social skill training, crisis intervention, and providing effective counseling interventions with children. An advanced degree in school counseling, clinical social work, or psychology is required. A master's degree and previous experience working in a school setting are preferred.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
Ability to see and hear within normal parameters with or without correction; full leg and arm mobility (walking, ability to access overhead shelves); full range of head, neck, and back movement; and unrestricted ability to bend knees, raise arms above the head, and to move hands, fingers, and wrist
Ability to lift, carry and/or move up to 30 pounds without difficulty
Ability to sit for extended periods; and ability to stand and/or walk for sustained periods of time
Due to work in close proximity to children, must pass fingerprinting and background clearance checks
TB clearance required
