This is a 100 percent, 10-month continuous appointment. Start date is August 16, 2021. The 10-month appointment dates for the 2021-22 academic year are August 16, 2021-June 12, 2022. Depending on availability, the new hire may begin August 1 for training.
Duties: 1) Develops a curriculum program to continually support and advance physical, social, emotional, and intellectual competence of Children. Supervises the children at all times while in their care. Provides varied opportunities for children’s active participation, independent choices, experimentation and problem-solving within the context of a structured setting and program. 50%
2) Provides an environment of acceptance in which children can grow toward a sense of positive identity. Assesses special needs of individual children and identifies need for specialized help where necessary. Assesses level of accomplishment for the individual child against the background of norms of attainment for a developmental stage and individual history. 20%
3) Accurately observes, records, and reports individual and group behavior and development. Provides professional, positive, effective communication and interactions with parents daily as well as through formal parent conferences and monthly newsletters in collaboration with Director of Early Childhood programs. 15%
4) Responsible for the supervision and role modeling of best practice to all the staff in the classroom, including the assistant teacher, student aides and field placement students. Provides training and defines responsibilities for supervision of various areas and activities (indoors and outdoors). Collaborates with other university departments, as well as community early childhood professionals and specialists. 6%
5) Establishes and maintains an attractive, safe, healthy environment for children. Ensures the care and educational programs meet or exceed state licensing standards. Notifies the Director regarding maintenance and repair needs, particularly if needing to do a work order request. Identifies unusual behavior or symptoms which may indicate need for health care. 7%
6) Remains knowledgeable of current child development issues. Keeps up to date on state required in-service training mandated by MDHS State Licensing and completes required 24 hours of training within the yearly timeframes. 2%
BA/BS plus at least 4 years of related experience or a combination of related education and work experience in an early childhood education setting with children under school age to equal 8 years.
A combination of education, work/intern experience that meets State of MN Human Services licensing requirements for childcare centers.
Commitment to working with diverse populations and fostering social justice, culturally responsive, and antiracist pedagogies.
A BA/BS degree in any field from an accredited college or university (18 credits must be in education) or:
Certificate/Credential for 2 year program in child development
Early childhood education at a MN community college or technical college
License from the MN Department of Education for Prekindergarten Associate.
Minnesota Dept. of Ed. Pre-Kindergarten/Nursery or Early Childhood Teacher licensure.
Experience and knowledge of Nature Play in Early Childhood.
Experience with emergent curriculum. (Curriculum which builds on children’s interests through extending and expanding their discoveries.)
Experience working with children and families from diverse backgrounds.
Able to physically supervise young children and immediately respond to emergency situations; able to visually observe children in their environment, protecting them and preventing harm to them. Ability to communicate with young children and their parents/guardians.
Agile enough to move quickly, bend frequently, get up and down from the floor and small chairs frequently, carry and lift children weighing between 15-20 pounds, willing to sit on the floor with children and to take children on walks, pushing strollers as needed.
Must not present a risk of transmission of reportable communicable diseases as verified by a professional health care provider. Ability to model positive problem solving and respectful behavior.
