Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is an independent coeducational, college preparatory day school serving grades Pre-Kindergarten (including 2 year olds) through 12. The school has a current enrollment of approximately 800 students and 165 employees located on two campuses in Suffolk, Virginia. NSA is seeking an experienced professional to plan, manage and oversee all aspects of a dynamic and engaging program for students before and after school and during the summer. The Extended Day and Summer Programs should align and support the school’s mission. The Director of Extended Day and Summer Programs will report to the Head of Lower School, Main Campus. Below are job responsibilities, which include, but are not limited to:
Duties and Responsibilities:
Primary Extended Day Responsibilities:
Research and plan a relevant, stimulating and engaging Extended Day Program, developmentally appropriate for all age groups; provide diverse opportunities for students throughout the school year
Work effectively with staff and parents in creating a warm and nurturing atmosphere for students
Interview and contract with local vendors to teach a variety of extracurricular classes
Arrange classes, manage student registration, create rosters and oversee vendor/student/parent communication
Collaborate with the Communications office to provide parents with information on Extended Day programming through the creation of a brochure, maintenance of web page, and through email communication
Act as a liaison for the program, navigating between students, parents, vendors and faculty
Receive and maintain all records for students, monitor numbers and ratios to arrange for adequate staffing and space, monitor to assure that all Department of Social Services standards are adhered to, prepare staff and parent handbooks
Manage budget, plan and purchase supplies, coordinate payroll and billing with Business Office
Manage all extended day employees, secure and schedule substitutes
Hours during school year: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. (Monday – Friday)
Primary Summer Programs Responsibilities:
Research and plan a relevant, stimulating and engaging Summer Camp Program with academic, athletic, art and other offerings for students of all ages
Create a well-balanced summer camp schedule with classes for all ages
Produce a camp brochure as well as other marketing materials with the help of the Communications office to advertise the Summer Camp Program to the school and to the wider community
Organize the purchase of supplies, t-shirts, lunch options, and advertising materials
Be an active presence during Summer Camp participating in carpool, leading gathering times, problem-solving complications, and gathering material to use in next year’s marketing efforts
Continued to expand the Summer Camp Programs, working with administrators and the school to grow the program to fit the needs of the community
Oversee all facets of Summer Programs, facilitate enrollment of campers, serve as primary source of communication with parents, assist in monitoring campers throughout each day
Work closely with the Director of Communications and the Office of Admissions to promote the School through positive public relations and marketing before and during camp
Receive and maintain all records for students, maintain staff records, monitor numbers and ratios, oversee all aspects of camp to assure that Department of Social Services regulations are met
Assist in camp setup the week prior to camp’s opening, prepare necessary records for weekly field trips, assist in logistical arrangement for field trips including securing contracts and payment, maintain staff records for payroll and submit to Business Office
This position requires an individual who has demonstrated success in working with children of all ages. This person should be highly organized and able to attend to the details of running two programs licensed by the Virginia Department of Social Services and the extensive recordkeeping and oversight required.
Requires understanding of child development and developmentally appropriate practices for children of all ages. Must be detail oriented, highly organized, have an interest in ongoing improvement and problem solving. Should possess ability to multitask and meet deadlines while dealing with campers, parents, staff and the School’s administration. Collaboration with Division Heads is essential. Working knowledge of Virginia Department of Social Services licensing regulations is beneficial. Must embrace the School’s mission and culture.
A bachelor’s degree in education or recreation management
5 – 10 years experience working at a school or similar setting
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and web-based tools. InDesign experience preferred.
Management experience with planning, budgeting, staffing, leading and motivating staff members
Candidates should be certified in First Aid/CPR/AED/MAT/Diabetes Medication Administration
