The Child and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative (CAHMI) is a Center within the Department of Population, Family and Reproduction Health at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Under the supervision Center leadership, the Research Data Analyst will collaborate on innovative Center and grant-funded projects to advance evidence based policy and practice and effectively engage families and communities in efforts to promote healthy child development and improve health outcomes for all children, youth and families in the United States and beyond.
With Center leadership, the Research Data Analyst will be accountable for the day to day development, operations, quality control, documentation, dissemination and communications about and continuous updating and improvement of the Center’s data-in-action web-based (1) National Maternal and Child Health Data Resource Center for the National Survey of Children’s Health (NSCH DRC) (www.childhealthdata.org), (2) Prioritizing Possibilities Data In Action online portal; (3)database management and development for the Center’s Community and Family Engagement Research Network’s (C-FERN) “Cycle of Engagement” (COE) research and the (3) Maternal and Child Health Online Measurement Compendium (MCH compendium); and other related research projects. The candidate will assume responsibility for implementing established processes and standards with Center leadership the continuous updating and production of data for use in the DRC, COE, MCH compendium as well as creation of publicly available datasets and codebooks in SPSS, SAS and STATA. The Research Data Analyst will have responsibility for ensuring continuous documentation of procedures and the transparent management and storage of all documents needed to support the sustainability and excellence of operations of the Center’s work and will be a core team member in the ongoing work to maintain data security, data storage and data access and use procedures.
The candidate must possess excellent verbal, written and technical writing skills and closely collaborate in all Center communications, research papers, presentations and educational materials development and dissemination. This includes methods and data findings briefs, data use alerts, social media posts on data and resources and providing technical assistance to those accessing and using the Center’s resources (DRC, CFERN COE, MCH Compendium, etc.). As possible, the candidate will represent the work of the Center with funding agencies, partners and the public.
The successful candidate must be passionate about maternal and child health (MCH), understand the role of measurement and data in improving MCH outcomes and enjoy both the technical and creative aspects of developing and using data. The Research Data Analyst should be a self-starter with the ability to work independently and manage multiple projects in a dynamic environment with changing priorities required. They must have strong conceptualizing, teamwork, problem solving, decision making, detail orientation and project management skills. Also required are demonstrated skills managing and conducting analysis using survey databases using univariate, bivariate and at least basic multivariable data analysis methods. Experience visualizing data findings by geographic area and population subgroups is a part of this job. Proficiency with SPSS is required and proficiency with SAS abd STATA is preferred. Ideally the candidate will also have experience working with and managing SQL databases. Specific hands-on experience in the development and analysis of large, nationally representative survey datasets such as the National Survey of Children’s Health and survey based collected from patients in data clinical settings is preferred.
Candidates must be comfortable proactively and effectively engaging Center leaders and staff, directly communicating with state and federal government partners and with our expert, family and youth stakeholders. Ability to conduct data analysis related to research papers and assistance with grant writing and presentation of research and data to external partners is important.
Primary Duites and Responsibilities:
Collaborate to define, document, continuously update and implement processes to ensure the development of measurement findings and backend management of the National Survey of Children’s Health Data Resource Center, the Prioritizing Possibilities Data In Action website, the MCH Measurement Compendium query tool and the Cycle of Engagement databases and reports. The successful candidate with become expert in and assume increasing responsibility to oversee the cleaning, coding and formulation and documentation of datasets for the Center’s NSCH Data Resource Center and “Data in Action” (DIA) online data resource projects. This involves becoming an expert in the formulation of analytic variables and the ability to ensure accuracy of descriptive technical information included in the DRC and related DIA online data query systems led by the Center. Assist at all levels with the development of public facing materials to ensure data users understand the topical and technical properties of the data. Synthesize complex information into easy-to-understand materials. Conduct similar activities for other Center data resources and research.
Conduct measurement validation, statistical analysis and coordinate data integrity and double- checking processes: Formulate and conduct required analysis in collaboration with Center leadership to assess and report on the validity of new and emerging data elements and variables used in Center research and projects. This includes assisting with analysis to support publications and topical data-in-action issue briefs. Excellent univariate and bivariate and basic multivariate (e.g. logistic regression) statistical analysis skills are required. Experience with confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modeling, latent class analysis, multi-level modeling and creation of visualization of data (e.g. US maps, infographics) is preferred. Coordinate data production and processes to double check all online data and web-based tools and oversee staff and student interns in doing so.
Co-develop codebooks and data sets for users of the National Survey of Children’s Health and related Center datasets and provide technical assistance on the valid and effective use of this data to promote research and improvements in maternal and child health outcomes: Assume increasing leadership in the development of codebooks and data sets delineating and documenting measures and items included in the NSCH and other Center datasets and ensure consistency of documentation between codebooks and the online data resource website and data query tool.
Collaborate and assume increasing leadership in the development of policy relevant issue and data briefs, process flow infographics, video tutorials and related materials to engage and educate researchers and policy, program and family leaders.
Collaborate in the automation of data reports based on data held in a SQL database for purposes of reporting information to key policy, provider and family audiences.
Collaborate with software and systems partners to identify innovative technical solutions for moderately complex application development tasks related to the DRC and COE web-based data-in-action resources
Supervision: Supervise student interns and research assistants as needed.
Other Tasks Include:
Partner in the design and development of peer reviewed publications
Partner in the creation of new collaborations and funding developments to further advance the work of the Center. Assist in grant proposal writing and prepare, manage, track submissions, and ensure all necessary documentation, guidelines, and protocols are followed.
Assist in all Center operational and administrative tasks related to hiring and training staff, issuing and managing contractors, reviewing and supporting budget management, purchasing of software and supplies and routine project and grant reports to funding agencies.
Bachelor's degree in related discipline. Three (3) years related experience. Additional education (Master's level) may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum experience required for the respective job.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s or PhD degree preferred (in public health, public policy, biostatistics, public administration, or related field).
Two years related experience working with a statistical software package (e.g. SPSS, SAS, STATA), including demonstrated competency in creating new variables, conducting moderately complex bi-variate and multi-variable analyses and demonstrated accuracy in interpreting and reporting prevalence estimates and other statistical data and analytic findings.
Excellent complex project planning, teamwork and time management and organizational skills
Proven ability to establish realistic goals and deliver work on schedule.
Ability to work independently and solve problems as they arise and communicate effectively with staff, colleagues and PI/Director
Knowledge of population-based survey research design and methods, and ability to synthesize and interpret statistical findings.
Must be a self-starter, innovative thinker and possess excellent communication, conceptualizing, teamwork, problem solving, decision making, detail orientation, writing and project management skills.
Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and be proactively responsible and accountable to define and confirm work, and to effectively prioritize managing multiple projects while setting and meeting self-set and agreed upon deadlines.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work with a wide variety of audiences, including written communication, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and presenting at national conferences.
Preferred experience working with pediatric practices, health plans, or federal/state/local MCH programs.
Preferred knowledge of programs, policies, and data sources related to maternal and child health, and ideally also related to children with special health care needs (CSHCN) and early childhood development.
This position will include routine extended work hours, such as travel to conferences and meetings and meeting project and funder deadlines.
