Virgin Islands Montessori School and Peter Gruber International Academy is a Montessori/IB school with about 300 students (toddler through 12th grade) on the U.S. Virgin Island of St. Thomas. We are a non-profit, independent, private school. Though we are an international school, we are not able to sponsor visa applicants, so viable candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
Our small school community is one that focuses on Education for Life. We pride ourselves on being a green school that is 100% solar powered and always environmentally conscious. Our Toddler program starts with children from about 15 months to 3 years, our 3 year olds through 6th grade are in Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) classrooms for Primary (4 classes), Lower Elementary (2 classes) and Upper Elementary (2 classes). Our 7th - 10th grade is authorized as an International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme and 11th and 12th grades are authorized as an IB Diploma Programme. Our tri-accreditation of Association Montessori International (AMI), International Baccalaureate (IB) and Middle States Association (MSA) leads our students to dual high school diplomas after experiencing a detailed academic continuum that focuses on the acquisition of strong academic skills. We have a Spanish Infusion program, as well as a focus on Mathematics and Science. Our graduates are attending their first choice, top tier colleges and universities.
Academic Director Position
The mission for this position is:
To maximize student learning for every student within VIMSIA within the framework of the Montessori and International Baccalaureate programs. This includes day to day curriculum, vertical integration between all grade levels, afterschool programs, enrichment programs, academic summer programs, school trips and international educational travel, partnerships with outstanding global educational institutions (NASA, Weizmann Institute, Spanish Exchange programs, University of the Virgin Islands, others) and programs for national and worldwide recognition. It also includes a heavy emphasis on teacher development and mentoring to give each teacher the tools & support to make their classroom successful in reaching and engaging every student.
The successful candidate will have exceptional academic and curriculum experience and knowledge; exceptional team building capabilities to unite academic staff between two different pedagogies; exceptional mentoring and people skills (listening and empathy) to provide a community environment that is safe and trustworthy, with colleagues at all levels able to feel equally important in striving to achieve the school’s mission to become one of the top 100 schools in the world. Successful candidate will have a strong understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures and naturally excel in providing an inclusive work environment.
The successful candidate will be a natural leader and motivator with excellent communication skills. They will be adept at successfully introducing and implementing change for growth, for researching and implementing innovative approaches to student learning that work within (and compliment) our existing Montessori and International Baccalaureate pedagogies.
The candidate will be responsible for ensuring strong vertically integrated academic programs (including Spanish Infusion, Math and Sciences) from our Toddler through our IB DP Program; professional development and mentorship of staff; implementing innovative academic programs or supplemental programs to maximize student learning; fostering growth mindset in staff and students.
The position will report directly to the Head of School with direct reports of the two Academic Directors (one for Montessori one for PGIA) and the student support staff that serve the entire school – including the school librarian and the learning & emotional support staff.
Citizenship: Must be legally authorized to work in the U. S. We are unable to sponsor candidates for a U.S. visa.
Education: Master’s degree in Education, Educational Leadership or related discipline.
Experience: At least five years experience as a Head of School, Principal or Academic Director
Experience with International Baccalaureate and/or Montessori (specifically Association Montessori Internationale) is preferred, but not required
Experience with all grade levels - Toddler through High School - preferred
