Eligible Special Selection clients should contact their Disability Counselor for assistance. DESCRIPTIONThe Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest departments within the School of Medicine. The missions of research, education and patient care are intertwined, and are integral to the goals of the department. The Department's 18 divisions include Academic General Pediatrics, Child Development & Community Health; Allergy, Immunology and Rheumatology; Cardiology; Dermatology; Dysmorphology; Emergency Medicine; Endocrinology; Gastroenterology; Genetics; Genome Information Sciences; Hospital Medicine; Infectious Diseases; Neonatology; Nephrology; Pharmacology & Drug Discovery; Rehabilitation Medicine; and Respiratory Medicine. UCSD Department of Pediatrics, Division of Developmental Pediatrics, Center for Community Health is contracted to operate this project by the County of San Diego, Health and Human Services Agency. The UCSD Center for Community Health is a multidisciplinary group of professional physicians, researchers, and public health and community outreach educators committed to improving health equity. This goal is achieved largely through translational research, translating advances from basic science and clinical research into the community. The scope of work for this contract is to assist community based agencies and professionals who work with families with children to improve the oral health of their clients and community members. Under supervision of the Community Oral Health Program Manager and direction of the PI, the employee will be a registered dental hygienist who will coordinate and provide professional, parent, and community education in oral health. The goals of this program are to expand education that will lead to improved oral health and nutrition among children, pregnant women and their families, and to increase utilization of oral health and nutrition resources. This includes providing cross-threaded messages on oral health, other health topics and access to care. Targeted audiences and agencies include those employees who work with: child care providers and childcare agencies, health care professionals and trainees, pregnant women, and the homeless community. Day to day activities include: (a) developing education materials and speaking on oral health and related topics, (b) preparation and dissemination of materials on oral health and other health topics, (c) assisting others on the project with their assigned tasks related to this scope of work, (d) being a leader with the help of others to meet tasks related to this scope of work; (e) collaborating with other UCSD employees assigned to this project as well as County of San Diego employees assigned to similar oral health outreach projects; and, (f) attending occasional health fairs, community varnish/sealant clinics, seminars and workshops.
