REPORTS TO: Upper School Director JOB PURPOSE: Greensboro Day School seeks applicants for a full-time high school History & Social Sciences teaching position. Teaching assignments include multiple sections of a 9th grade Global Perspectives course. Additional experience teaching other social science electives (i.e. AP Psychology, AP Government & Politics, Sociology, etc.) is desired. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Demonstrate competence and thoroughness in planning and preparation. - Demonstrate knowledge of content and structure of the discipline in the design of lessons.
- Employ knowledge about child and adolescent development and content-appropriate pedagogy.
- Collaborate regularly with colleagues to ensure curricular alignment and consistent delivery of content and assessment.
- Plan for diverse learners by designing appropriately differentiated instruction to respond to the students’ abilities, interests, developmental readiness, and learning styles, aiming to provide an appropriate level of challenge for each student.
- Develop lessons that incorporate experiential learning (engaging students in learning by doing).
- Integrate appropriate technology and other effective resources and methods into teaching practices and student learning activities.
- Design formative assessments whose results will provide student feedback that will guide instruction.
- Design summative assessments that will evaluate students’ learning through projects and other such authentic demonstrations of competence.
Establish a classroom environment that promotes and sustains learning. - Establish a climate of respect for others, a commitment to a diverse, equitable and inclusive community of learners and a collaborative approach to learning.
- Provide a classroom that fosters a safe environment for intellectual, social and emotional growth
- Set and maintain acceptable standards of behavior in the classroom
- Provide a safe, nurturing, caring educational environment in which every student sees the teacher as an ally and accessible advisor in the student’s quest to succeed.

Demonstrate a high level of professionalism with regard to the practice of teaching. - Maintain an active internal professional learning network.
- Connect current research about child and adolescent development to teaching methodologies.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date records regarding student performance and communicate regularly with parents.
- Contribute to the greater professional educational community,

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: In independent schools, there are many responsibilities, large and small, that are necessary to develop a sense of community and for the institution to run in a safe and efficient manner. As a result, all faculty members have required responsibilities that are considered part of working at Greensboro Day School. These duties include, but are not limited to: - Advising a club or activity
- Contributing to the life of the school through the completion of assigned duties (examples include lunch supervision, extra academic help for students, carpool, advising, activities periods, field trips – day and overnight, assemblies, budget review and preparation and bus duty)
- Participating on committees, and involvement in student organizations and other non-instructional activities to the extent possible, including admission events, sporting events, plays, concerts, commencement and celebrations
- Serving as a role model through active participation in leadership opportunities in professional organizations
- Reading professional publications and maintaining professional learning networks
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Head of School
QUALIFICATIONS: - Bachelor’s Degree required, Masters Degree or higher desired
- Understanding of child development for ages of students in class or grade
- Proficient in the use of technology as a classroom tool
- Requisite certification in teaching area
- Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and unwavering commitment to Greensboro Day School’s mission
- Collaborative and flexible
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Sense of humor is appreciated
Working conditions Daily work requires supervising students both indoors and outdoors. Faculty are required to participate in regular safety drills, learn CPR, learn how to apply a tourniquet, provide basic first aid, administer epi-pens when needed, and be able to support other student-specific health-related needs. Some weekend, evening, or early morning work may be required from time to time. Physical requirements All teachers must be able to provide adequate supervision indoors and outdoors, and they must be able to ensure the safety of students during drills and emergencies that may arise from time to time. Some evening and weekend commitments including school celebrations, admissions and athletic events, concerts, and plays are encouraged as part of the job. Direct reports N/A
