Position Purpose: The Early Childhood and Elementary Head supervises two distinctive and innovative programs that are integral parts of the entire school. The Early Childhood and Elementary Head is a collaborative leader who is responsible for all curricular and non-curricular activities involving students, faculty, and parents in the early childhood and elementary grades. Reporting to the Head of School the Early Childhood and Elementary Head is an instructional leader with a background in and passion for progressive education and a strong commitment to the Capitol Hill Day School’s mission and philosophy of teaching and learning. To ensure a cohesive PK-8 program and a school-wide commitment to mission and philosophy, the Early Childhood and Elementary Head actively works with other school administrators.
Essential duties and responsibilities of the Early Childhood and Elementary Head include, but are not limited to:
Act as the educational leader of the early childhood and elementary programs, responsible for day-to-day operation and, in collaboration with the Head of School, strategic direction.
Maintain congruence between the Capitol Hill Day School’s mission and philosophy and all early childhood and elementary program activities.
Function as the chief articulator of the programs, expectations, behavioral guidelines, and other information necessary to ensure that all constituencies are fully informed.
Coordinate the development and ongoing review of early childhood and elementary curriculum, including for horizontal and vertical alignment.
Work alongside the DEI Coordinator to continue fostering the integration of DEI in all aspects of classroom life.
In coordination with faculty, facilitate the management of routine school matters as well as nurturing a culture that stimulates ideas on issues of educational/philosophical interest and concern.
Encourage, guide, and plan for professional development and performance management of teachers.
Participate in the early childhood and elementary admission process—helping to lead tours, host visitors, evaluate applications, write articles for School publications.
Collaborate with the Head of School for recruitment of new teaching staff.
Coordinate with the Student Support Team in helping to meet the academic and social-emotional needs of students.
Be a visible presence in all areas of the School.

Qualifications for the position:
The Early Childhood and Elementary Head must have highly developed leadership, collaborative, and interpersonal skills, and must relate well with young children and adults. The Early Childhood and Elementary Head must have proven and successful experience demonstrating the ability to lead and manage a progressive school program. Specific requirements include:
Exceptional knowledge of and commitment to a progressive philosophy of education
Understanding of child development
Teaching experience at the early childhood and/or elementary levels
Experience leading a team to oversee an educational program, carry out a vision, and/or implement an initiative
Outstanding communication skills, including: writing, speaking, listening, planning, and organizing
Strong academic credentials, including an advanced degree and a growth mindset
Personal and professional qualities including friendly demeanor, sense of humor, high standards, flexibility, and ability to work both individually and collaboratively
