The ideal candidate is an experienced early childhood music teacher with educational vision, a natural ability to engage and support young learners, choral teaching ability, instrumental experience, proven classroom management skills, strong interpersonal relations skills, dedicated to social-emotional learning and positive discipline practices, and a willingness to work collaboratively with faculty and families. Experience with integrating an outdoor classroom approach into the curriculum is a plus. Prior teaching experience in a NAEYC accredited program is valuable.
Duties include planning and implementing singing, dancing, playing instruments and music literacy to students ages two through kindergarten in a child-centered, developmentally appropriate approach with as much active music-making as possible. The music teacher will provide a music curriculum in the homeroom classes while managing the classroom effectively with compassion, high energy, attention to detail, and problem-solving strategies. The teacher will develop an engaging environment that encourages children’s ideas, initiatives, and creativity.
Requirements for the job include a minimum of a degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Music or related fields and experience teaching in Early Childhood and/or Elementary grades. Transcripts and diploma/s need to be made available upon hiring.
The Country Day School is a NAEYC accredited independent school which offers developmentally appropriate educational programs and summer camp for up to 275 young children from 2 through 6 years old. The campus, with two historic education buildings, is located on four wooded acres with nine playgrounds, a butterfly garden, nature trail, a nature room, an art studio, and a library in McLean, VA.

Create an optimal learning environment for the study of music in the regular classroom
Move from classroom to classroom with ease, carrying light to moderate (5-15 pounds) of instruments
Demonstrate movements (jump, dance, walk, etc.) while teaching music to students
Create, display, and turn in monthly lesson plans
Participate in school events and prepare students to participate in the same, such as school-wide sing-alongs, kindergarten musical field trip, and end of year celebrations

Walk from classroom to classroom with ease, in a timely manner, and carrying 5-15 pounds (light to moderate weight) of musical instruments
Navigate uneven terrain on the playgrounds
Must be able to stoop, bend, kneel, stand, and interact with the children (2-6 years of age) at their level
Assume postures in low level positions that best allow physical and visual contact with children
Must possess acceptable hearing and visual capabilities in order to monitor environment and children’s well-being
Must be able to sustain a high level of energy
Ability to sit, stand, bend, reach, and walk while being actively engaged with students in the classroom
