ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT As a department of Bellevue College, our mission is to provide high quality, family centered, developmentally appropriate care & early education for young children and their families. In addition, we strive to provide a creative, safe, learning environment that nurtures, respects, and supports each individual's unique qualities and potential.
The Early Learning Center encourages discovery, creativity, overall development, independence, self-regulation, problem solving, and exploration in a safe, respectful, yet stimulating, relationship based environment.Our program maintains a child-centered philosophy that accepts each child at his/her own developmental level and encourages him/her to learn through rich experiences. When planning the curriculum, teachers provide experiences that reflect families' interests, hobbies, cultures, and languages.
Support teachers in planning, implementing, and evaluating curriculum, environment, and activities both indoors and out, based on individual and group development. Encourage and support family involvement in all aspects of the program. In conjunction with assigned teaching staff, supervise the daily classroom events and programs. Establish and maintain positive partnerships with center families through daily interactions, written communication and conferences. Understand and follow center policies, procedures, and philosophy. Be familiar with and adhere to all WA state licensing standards. Perform other related duties are required &/or assigned.
In Head Start classrooms, Associate degree with 45 credit hours in early childhood education with experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement for a year-for-year basis. Two years of experience working in a group setting with children of the ages enrolled in the Center. Demonstrated ability to relate and communicate effectively with children, families, community members, and staff of diverse ages, backgrounds and abilities.
SPECIFIC POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Have, or obtain within 90 days of hiring, current infant/child CPR & Basic First Aid; Blood Borne Pathogen training, and Food Handler's card. Proof of negative TB skin test. Successful completion of a Washington criminal background Ability to meet minimum licensing requirements for WA Dept of Early Learning (DEL). Ability to safely supervise groups of children and their activities by standing, walking, reaching, sitting (on floor, small chairs, &/or outdoors), frequent stooping, and lifting up to 40 pounds.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS In Head Start classrooms, Bachelor degree in Early Childhood Education/Child Development or closely related field, plus eight years Head Start teaching experience in an early childhood setting. Demonstrated ability to be responsive to the needs of a diverse student population and community. Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a teaching team. Demonstrated experience with curriculum development appropriate to age group enrolled in Center.
