The School of Family and Consumer Sciences (SFCS) invites applications to fill two 9-month (academic year) tenure-track positions with possible summer teaching. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate nutrition courses; developing new nutrition courses; conducting nutrition research; obtaining external funding; publishing in peer-reviewed journals; involving undergraduate and graduate students in research; and participating in appropriate service activities. Collectively, this position includes teaching, scholarship, and professional service.
The successful applicant for one position will use biochemical or molecular approaches to explore the role of diet or diet-derived compounds in tissue culture and preclinical rodent models related to, but not limited to, cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, or cancer. Research areas focusing on the effect of diet and diet-derived compounds on epigenetics, the microbiome, and behavioral neuroscience are also welcome.
The successful applicant for the other position will use community-based or translational approaches in areas including, but not limited to, how nutrition relates to human growth and development, physical performance, health behaviors in the prevention or treatment of diet-related chronic diseases.
The program currently offers a baccalaureate degree in nutrition and foods (3 tracks, including dietetics); an accredited Dietetic Internship with a concentration in pediatrics and a focus on food security that includes graduate coursework (www.fcs.txstate.edu/undergraduate/nutr ) and master’s degree in human nutrition (www.fcs.txstate.edu/ms_nutrition).
Texas State University, a Hispanic-Serving Institution with Emerging Research status, is located in central Texas between two large metropolitan areas, Austin and San Antonio. Proximity to Austin and San Antonio allows for a diverse and expansive Nutrition and Foods Program with 50 graduate students and 12 dietetic interns. The Nutrition and Foods programs are housed in the Family and Consumer Sciences building containing state-of-the-art research facilities equipped with labs for community nutrition, biochemical nutrition and anthropometry, and a new comparative research facility. The School of Family and Consumer Sciences (SFCS) mirrors Texas State University’s values of student-centered teaching and learning, diversity, and sustainability. Interdisciplinary health research unites faculty across campus including faculty from SFCS. The SFCS is located across the street from the Student Recreation Center and in close proximity to on- and off-campus walking paths. Faculty are encouraged to join the free, university-wide wellness program, WellCats.
Education Earned Ph.D. in nutrition or complementary health-related field (with evidence of at least 18 graduate hours of coursework in nutrition. Note: Ph.D.s in Food Science and Food Biotechnology will not be considered.)
Teaching Experience teaching nutrition science at the university level.
Research Clearly defined research agenda Experience conducting research related to one or more of the following areas: • The role of nutrition, i.e. diet and diet-derived compounds, in the prevention and/or treatment of obesity and chronic diseases, including pre-clinical, clinical, community-based and translational research • Biochemical and molecular nutrition • Nutrition and epigenetics • Nutrition and the microbiome • Nutrition and neuroscience • Community or public health nutrition • Health equity or health disparities related to nutrition • Policies, systems, and environmental influences on nutrition • Maternal nutrition and fetal/child development/nutrition
Experience publishing in indexed and peer-reviewed journals in nutrition.
