Presidio Hill School is an independent, progressive school located in the Presidio Heights neighborhood of San Francisco and serves a diverse population of approximately 220 students in transitional kindergarten to 8th grade, with a faculty and staff of approximately 45 people. The middle school, grades 6-8, has approximately 95 students and 12 faculty members.Established in 1918 by artist-educator-activists Helen Salz and Flora Arnstein, Presidio Hill School is the oldest continuously operating progressive school in California, with a mission and history connected to social justice. Our new Middle School Director and High School Placement Counselor will have demonstrated passion and experience teaching and working with a school community that explicitly strives to be inclusive.
Primary Responsibilities for Middle School Director:
Establish and maintain a positive and professional relationship with faculty, students, school personnel, and parents/guardians
Administer, supervise, develop, and support all aspects of academic and student life in the middle school (MS)
Maintain an environment that supports the highest quality of teaching and learning while ensuring safety and joyfulness
Recruit, hire, train, support, supervise, and evaluate MS faculty and staff
Meet regularly with faculty and the administrative team
Manage and communicate policies and procedures pertaining to the middle school
Serve on the School’s administrative council
In collaboration with the Lower School Director, synchronize the lower and middle school programs
Oversee the maintenance of student records ?
Supervise and coordinate the preparation of reports for parents/guardians in accordance with?the established policies of the School
Participate in the Middle School admission process, attend tours as appropriate, interview prospective students and parents (on occasion), consult with the Admission Committee
Plan and coordinate meetings (group and individual) for parents/guardians, students, and other constituents of the PHS community
Oversee the review and development of curriculum and schedules for grades 6-8 and work on articulation of Middle School curriculum with other PHS programs, specifically Lower School and Afterschool programs
With School Counselor and Learning Specialists, develop age-appropriate Social-Emotional Learning and Health and Human Development curriculum
Participate in planning the annual school calendar
On a rotational basis, supervise middle school lunch, recess and curbside drop-off/pick-up
Plan and lead regularly scheduled faculty meetings and student assemblies
Coordinate academic events/showcases
Perform various reasonable tasks from time to time as requested by the Head of School
Primary Responsibilities for High School Placement Counselor:
Facilitate and teach SSAT Prep for 7th and 8th grade students
Teach High School Application Prep class twice per week from August to February; then co-teach High School Readiness/Library class with PHS Librarian
Write high school recommendations for all 8th grade students in the Fall, and facilitate drafting of recs from 8th grade math & ELA teachers
Serve as PHS liaison to SMART, A Better Chance, and Breakthrough during high school application process
Plan and implement annual high school workshops, including HS Kick-off Night for 7th grade families in the Spring, and PHS alum HS panels for 7th and 8th grade families
Edit all student application responses, and parent/guardian responses
Deliver all required high school application documents (transcripts, recommendations, and supplementary application materials), as requested, to respective schools
Plan and proctor Spring and Fall PSSATs, and December SSAT flex test
Visit Bay Area Independent, Parochial, Public and Charter schools to learn about programming and meet with admission directors
Present yearly admission results to PHS board of trustees
Represent PHS at Bay Area Secondary School Placement Counselors (BASSC) meetings
Communicate directly with high school admission directors to advocate for PHS students in the admission process
Post weekly High School Process Updates to the PHS webpage
Perform various reasonable tasks from time to time as requested by the Head of School
Skills, Qualifications, and Experience
The successful candidate will possess excellent interpersonal skills as well as a depth of experience teaching in a range of middle school grades and supervising/supporting middle school grade teachers. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of progressive pedagogy and multicultural education, child development, the professional development of teachers, and the building of an ethical and diverse community. Working collaboratively with all members of the school community, the Middle School Director and High School Placement Counselor will be an essential member of our leadership team, responsible for overseeing an innovative, integrated, progressive program that stretches students intellectually and emotionally. They should also have a demonstrated commitment to addressing issues of equity, belonging, and privilege, within and outside the classroom.
In addition, the Middle School Director & High School Placement Counselor will possess:
Experience working in a multicultural environment
Knowledge of Progressive Education
Demonstrated commitment to the mission and core values of Presidio Hill School
5 years+ teaching experience in elementary/middle school
Leadership experience in supervision and professional development
Good humor, energy, and strategic vision
Highly effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Technological savvy, ideally including a working knowledge of FileMaker databases, Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Suite. Willingness and ability to learn new software as necessary.
A Bachelor’s degree. A graduate degree or degree-in-progress related to education, or educational leadership, is desirable.
