The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine is the third largest clinical department within the School of Medicine with 285 full-time faculty members, 280 clinical faculty members, and over 200 staff. Department faculty provide clinical services in 5 hospitals, 14 primary care locations, and several outpatient sites in addition to telepsychiatry consultations to more than 150 clinics in Washington and beyond. The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Mobile Mental Health Support Specialist.
The Mobile Health (mHealth) for Mental Health Program (www.mh4mh.org) at the University of Washington in Seattle is recruiting for a Mobile Mental Health Support Specialist. The program is affiliated with UW’s Behavioral Research in Technology and Engineering (BRITE) Center within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. The Mobile Health Support Specialist/Research Coordinator will dedicate approximately half of their time (50%) serving as an mHealth practice facilitator interacting with clients with serious mental illness and frontline clinical staff at community mental health centers as part of a statewide mHealth implementation initiative. Client and clinician-facing activities will be supervised by a psychologist licensed in the State of Washington. They will dedicate the remaining 50% to coordination and management of research activities. They will be responsible for direct research activities (e.g., data collection, participant screening and interviews, data management) and research support activities (e.g., preparation of IRB protocols, managing project finances). They will drive recruitment, assessment, and logistical management of several NIH-funded studies using custom smartphone software to assess and treat serious mental illnesses.
Employee will be expected to use independent judgement in dealing with external organizations, clients with serious mental illness and clinical staff at community mental health centers, as well as internal faculty and staff, and to work independently to follow and resolve issues with complex research protocols. The position will enable the successful execution of several R01 NIH funded research studies. The University will be represented as a leader in research for severe mental to those who participate in the study or learn about the study through dissemination efforts.
Responsibilities: Research 40%
Responsible for overseeing and conducting community-based recruitment of participants with severe mental illness.
Works directly with participants to trouble-shoot technical issues, arrange in-person meetings, and provide technical support when needed.
Manages participant tracking throughout the study.
Ensures the protection of human subjects at study sites.
Troubleshoots research protocols and techniques as needed.
Manages recruitment of study participants through traditional methods and web-based ads (Facebook, Google Ads).
Designs and performs all activities related to the project using sophisticated research and data management techniques.
Researches literature and consults with other investigators within and outside of the institution to identify and resolve complex issues or problems.
Assesses feasibility of proposed research investigations and prepare analyses of project costs (salaries, equipment, travel, patient reimbursement, medical or laboratory fees, participating satellite expenses, administration and overhead, etc.).
In collaboration with the PI, prepares relevant portions of grant applications, ensuring compliance of submission with sponsor requirements.
Coordination of a recently awarded National Institute of Mental Health project focusing on testing using technology to better understand schizophrenia.
Meticulously tracks and coordinates project progress by maintaining assessment schedules and project time lines. Routinely keeps Research Manager informed of project status and potential problem areas.
Assures deadlines are met, notifies all project partners of impending deadlines to assure compliance.
Serves as the primary liaison with partner mental health centers and study sites.
May supervise study staff located at partnering mental health centers within Seattle.
Establishes and coordinates research procedures in adherence to protocol requirements.
Assures that all Federal and funding agency guidelines and requirements are met.
Oversees preparation of PI documents, presentations, and external correspondence.
Coordinates logistics of meetings.
Communicates with the Research Manager, Center Investigators as well as study sites and decentralized project staff as needed.
Provides ongoing facilitation, consultation and technical assistance to on-site and decentralized project staff as requested or needed.
Assists in preparation of findings for grant proposals, reports, publications and other research projects.
Organizes and facilitates in-person and webinar-based conferences.
Systematically tracks funding opportunities, publications, and other developments relevant to the PI and Center.
Assists in preparing literature reviews for proposals, peer-reviewed publications and other projects as needed• Prepare dissemination materials for the Center’s efforts including print, email listservs, online website, and online and mobile social media (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Medical Mingle).
Works with the PI and Center Investigators to ensure information disseminated to scientists, technologists, providers and the public is current, appropriate, and accurate.
Staff Supervision: 5%
Trains and evaluates staff and student assistants to meet changing department needs.• Ensures staff meet the protection of human subjects in practice (correspondence, storage of research materials, data collection, etc.)
Travel within Seattle is required. Additionally, must be able to travel outside WA to visit collaborating institutions/investigators if needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements: Master's Degree in Social Work and one or less year’s minimum work experience
Experience working with digital health studies and/or people diagnosed with severe mental illness is desired, but not necessarily required.
