Dr. Gail Goodman with the Psychology Department at the University of California, Davis seeks to fill two 50% Junior Specialist positions starting October 2019. These positions will have a duration of 6 months, with the possibility of extension depending on funding and performance. The successful candidate will participate in all aspects of research on such topics as attachment, memory, child development, foster care, child maltreatment, forensic interviewing, program evaluation, and adult development, from stimulus creation/survey construction to data analysis to presentation of research findings in seminars, conferences, manuscripts submitted for publication; and grant/report writing. The successful candidate will also be involved in publishable research activities, including reviewing journal articles, engaging in discussions on research and the interpretation of research results, independent analysis of data, interpretation of empirical results, and the writing up of results for publication in scholarly journals. Where appropriate, the individual would earn authorship on these publications. The person hired is also expected to help with data collection, recruit families for participation in data collection studies, help create materials for studies, organization and coding of data, ordering research materials, helping organize and run research meetings, and working with research teams. The person will also help create materials for submission (where appropriate, as first author) at conferences. Some travel to research sites may be involved. Additional responsibilities include training undergraduate research assistants in the lab, keeping track of and submitting research expenses, and maintaining and improving laboratory organization.
Responsibilities will include:
Assisting Principal Investigator in performing and documenting research projects, conference/meeting presentations, recruiting and managing research participants, individual differences testing, interviewing, and data coding (50%).
Training and mentoring undergraduate research assistants by, for example, organizing Google Calendars and Google Drives, creating laboratory and study/coding manuals (25%).
Creating and merging data sets, creating and updating data dictionaries, and analyzing data in new or existing datasets using SPSS and Qualtrics (15%).
Contributing to the preparation and completion of research grants, articles, IRBs, reports, etc. (10%).
Position Qualifications Include
Required: Bachelor's degree in Psychology or related field; experience with human subjects in a laboratory setting; research on topics such as attachment, child maltreatment, children's and adults' memory for traumatic events, forensic interviewing, foster care, psychopathology, and wellbeing; knowledge and advanced skill in statistical analyses; familiarity with statistical software packages such as SPSS, R, and/or Mplus; familiarity with IRBnet, IRB Manager, Spokeo and TLOxo; ability to manage research personnel; strong organizational skills; attention to detail; excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational, and documentation skills; proven ability to work well in research teams and independently.
Preferred: Experience with longitudinal and cross-sectional testing of children or adults in survey and behavioral research, knowledge of experimental methods to study child and adult development including memory development, experience with and knowledge of memory-related and psychopathology-related research, cultural sensitivity, experience with SPSS and Qualtrics files and analyses, experience with TLO files, experience with AggieTravel and AggieBuy, familiarity with human subjects protocols, experience conducting interviews and consenting potential research participants, experience with confidential data, excellent social relations, ability to work in a team and independently, high ethical standards (e.g., regarding confidential information).
Salary: Junior Specialist Step 1, $19.50/hour.
