The Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County Parenting & Family Life Educator works under the supervision of the Sr. Issue Leader to teach the parenting education program in SULLIVAN County. The main objective is to provide prevention focused and research informed parenting education programs to meet the diverse needs of SULLIVAN County, youth, families, and professionals. The position is responsible for using current research based curricula to enhance the child rearing and caregiving practices of those who live, work or interact with children, in order to promote safe, stable and nurturing homes and communities. In collaboration with the Sr. Issue Leader, this position is responsible for the direct teaching of the parenting and family life workshops and workshop series in SULLIVAN County. This individual represents Cornell Cooperative Extension's parenting education and family life programs to the public, community leaders, government officials and Cornell University. This position is grant funded.
This is a part-time, 20 hours per week, benefits eligible position. Additional hours may be available up to full time dependent on funding and program need. Required Qualifications: - Associate's degree or equivalent in field related to child and family wellbeing, including but not limited to: Human Development, Child Development, Health, Home Economics/Family and Consumer Sciences, Psychology, Sociology or Public Health, and two years relevant experience. GED/High School Diploma and three years relevant experience is acceptable.
- Previous experience in direct teaching.
- Experience with public speaking in small and large groups.
- Ability to communicate effectively through oral, written, and visual channels using traditional educational tools as well as electronic and social marketing/media technology.
- Ability to effectively lead and participate in professional and volunteer team efforts.
- Ability to transport visual aids, tables, and meeting materials to program sites.
- Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
- Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications: - Bilingual in Spanish (read, write, speak).
- Related college credits or coursework in Human Development & Family Studies, Child Development (prenatal to age 21), Adult Learning, Experiential Education/Group Learning, Diversity Education.
- Knowledge and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with Sullivan County schools and agencies.
- Ability to utilize current Association computer technology to author reports and proposals, communicate internally and externally, prepare visuals, access information and export educational materials.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions: Program Responsibilities: Program Delivery - 75% - Deliver educational workshops and/or trainings in the area of parenting and family life to Sullivan County parents and caregivers.
- Deliver parenting and family life educational programs and/or trainings to professionals in Sullivan County.
- Deliver basic parenting and family life information in response to requests (telephone, email, etc.) from individuals and professionals.
- Serve as a subject matter resource for the Sullivan County community in the area of parenting and family life.
- Provide parenting and family life educational messages to media (print, radio and web).
- May assist with maintaining linkages with Cornell University faculty and Parenting Work Team (PWT) for program delivery guidance.
- As part of program delivery, represent CCE before the public, community leaders and government officials.
Program Evaluation - 5% - Implement program evaluation as designed, and assist with interpretation of data and communication of results and findings to funders and University faculty.
Administrative Responsibilities: Management - 5% - Support the involvement of volunteers to assist with parenting education offerings.
- May provide low complexity administrative tasks to assist in guiding the implementation of communication strategies on particular program/function.
- May give guidance to volunteers and staff, including those performing similar work.
Coordination/Operation - 10% - May assist in coordinating program implementation activities including outreach and recruitment activities.
- Coordinate workshop locations and logistics, supplies, resources, etc.
- Work with local agencies and organizations to coordinate guest presenters for caregivers and youth as appropriate.
- Compile existing resources into educational program materials.
- Implement established program schedule.
- Provide basic office tasks such as copies, filing, mailing, ordering food and program supplies, and submitting and tracking expenses for the program budget.
- Provide information for program flyers, brochures, press releases, website, social media, as well as participate in radio and television interviews to promote the program.
- Transport self and materials to program and recruitment/outreach sites.
- Prepare materials for report submission to meet funding agency requirement.
- Provide required information needed in the financial documentation to meet the grant or budget requirement.
Professional Improvement - 5% - In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities.
- Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Extension programs and other duties as assigned.
- Attend training in Cornell University curriculum related to the position subject matter.
- Attend additional inservice, community and Extension meetings and trainings as necessary to stay current and involved.
- Attend required new staff orientation, computer training as necessary to maintain or enhance work knowledge and skills.
- Contribute to the overall success of the organization by performing all assigned duties in a professional, timely, and accurate manner.
- Be aware of, and adhere to, established Cornell Cooperative Extension policies and procedures.
- Seek professional development opportunities for self, to promote the use of current and research based resource materials and curriculum.
