Provide life skills support and assistance for SVSU and Delta students formerly in foster care; recruit and train peer mentors; supervise part-time assistant life skills coaches; develop and maintain research and data from the program. This position is on-call and may require work hours outside of normal business hours and occasional weekend work.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Advise and support youth in all areas of life skills, to include, but not be limited to: assistance with housing, employment, education, budgeting/financial management, identifying/maintaining appropriate relationships, career planning, parenting, medical/mental health, finding community resources/funding.
Establish working relationships with appropriate and relevant campus departments and community partners to access services for youth and assist youth in moving toward self-sufficiency within both campus and community environments.
Utilize a variety of communication methods to keep in regular contact with eligible youth, such as social networking, phone calls, face-to-face meetings, texting, etc.
Provide support and encouragement to youth utilizing group settings such as, but not limited to, educational and recreational activities.
Hosts life skill workshops and social events for program participants
Assists with outreach/recruitment activities on and off campus.
This position requires crisis support and some work hours may be outside of normal business hours with occasional weekend work.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The Life Skills Coach shall possess a BSW plus 4 years experience in child welfare or a master's degree in one of the following human services areas: Education, Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Family Ecology, Consumer/Community Services, Family Studies, Family and/or Child Development, Guidance/School Counseling, Counseling Psychology, or Criminal Justice; be clinically and trauma trained; and have experience in crisis response and conflict resolution.
Strong interpersonal skills, organizational, verbal and written communication skills.
Experience with children and young adults in foster care, knowledge or understanding of the specific needs that foster youth encounter when entering college.
Valid driver's license required and reliable independent transportation.
Experience and ability to positively interact with diverse student populations and groups.
Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
