The University of Washington (UW) Departments of Global Health (DGH) and Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (PBSci) are seeking candidates for up to two (2) faculty positions at the rank of Assistant Professor and Associate Professor (without tenure) to join the UW Global Mental Health Program (UWGMH). These are full-time, 12-month service period positions with anticipated start dates in fall of 2019. The position Rank will be determined based on candidate's level of experience.
The program aims to reduce the burden of mental disorders in low resource settings around the world through innovative and high impact research, training, partnerships, and evidence-informed advocacy. Strategic priorities for the initial phase of development include: 1) global mental health implementation science, 2) health systems research and the integration of mental health into a variety of healthcare and non-healthcare platforms, and 3) capacity-building and technical assistance skills to support the translation of research to real world implementation guidance. These domains are consistent with the DGH priority of expanding implementation science and its application to non-communicable diseases. They are also consistent with the PBSci priority of supporting research and related activities that yield population impact on mental health.

The Department of Global Health (DGH) is one of the premier Global Health Programs in the world. Housed jointly in the Schools of Medicine and Public Health, with a mandate to harness the expertise of all 16 UW schools and colleges, the department's 385 faculty use highly interdisciplinary approaches to work with colleagues in 140 countries to improve health, reduce health disparities, and build sustainable health system capacity. The Department's major research, educational, and capacity-building programs focus on a broad range of health issues, including several with strong, synergistic links to mental health such as HIV and other infectious diseases; women's, adolescents' and children's health; injury and violence prevention; drug safety; health metrics; and health systems strengthening and program delivery. The department's research programs, which total over $110 million/year, span from interdisciplinary laboratory-based investigation, through multi-center clinical trials, to metrics development, program evaluation and implementation science.
With over 300 regular faculty and 450 clinical faculty, the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences supports a wide range of clinical, training, and research activities. UW Psychiatry is widely known for its development of evidence-based collaborative care programs that improve access to mental health care for underserved populations in primary care, rural, and otherwise underserved settings throughout the world. The Department's research has demonstrated that collaborative care programs in which psychiatrists and other mental health specialists collaborate effectively with primary care and other health care providers lead to better access to care, better health outcomes, and lower overall health care costs, achieving the 'Triple Aim of Health Care Reform.' The department's research portfolio totals more than $40 million/year and covers a wide range of translational research from clinical neurosciences to clinical and health services research.
Faculty in the Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Global Health conduct grant and contract supported research and training activities in Global Mental Health in countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. The Departments have particular strengths in developing and implementing effective interventions for common mental and substance use disorders in low resource settings, including the treatment of mental illnesses in primary care and other general medical settings; maternal, adolescent and child mental health care; and the care of trauma-exposed individuals with associated mental health symptoms. We seek new faculty to join, build on, or extend this substantial portfolio of work to new areas of research relevant to global mental health. Duties include training and research in global mental health implementation science, research on health systems and the integration of mental health into a variety of healthcare and non-healthcare platforms, and implementing the translation of research to real world implementation guidance. A successful applicant for this position will be an accomplished junior, mid-career, or senior researcher and/or clinician who will contribute to further development of the Global Mental Health Program through impactful research, teaching, capacity development, and partnership strengthening.

Duties: As a faculty member in the UW Global Mental Health Program, the candidate will contribute to developing innovative training, education and research in one of the three priority areas that support the UWGMH strategy as well as the strategic priorities of DGH and PBSci: global mental health implementation science, health systems research and integrated care, and translation of research to real world implementation capacity. The faculty member will also contribute to supporting the implementation of programs that improve mental health in low-resource settings globally; mentoring trainees in the global mental health research enterprise; securing independent grant and contract funding to support global mental health research, education and training; and expanding research partnerships with other components of UW, as well as local, regional, national, and global partners. All UW faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.

Required: All candidates for this position must have an M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent in a relevant medical, health science, or social science field, or foreign equivalent. In order to be eligible for university sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-US) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. medical license examination (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
