About the Virtual Lab School
Created by experts at The Ohio State University, the Virtual Lab School (VLS) addresses a critical need for an easy to navigate online professional development and resource system that empowers professionals to build their knowledge and skills around research-based practices in child care and youth development. Supported by an extensive repository of professional development videos, research-based content, and relevant, interactive learning materials, the VLS simulates the enriching learning experiences found in university lab school settings.
The VLS system offers distinct tracks for center-based professionals including direct-care providers (infant/toddler, preschool, and school-age), training and curriculum specialists (coaches), and management personnel, as well as a track for home-based care providers who typically care for mixed- age groups. Anchored by 15 Core Content courses that include the 13 Functional Areas of the Child Development Associate competency standards used in early care settings around the world, the Core Content covers research-based developmentally appropriate practices for working with children from birth to age 12 across all the functional roles in child and youth care and education settings.
In addition to the Core Content, the VLS features a series of special topics and other resources that support the development of a highly trained and effective workforce.
The DoDVLS Content Coordinator will update and write content, activities, and related materials for the DoDVLS project and work to keep the DoDVLS up-to-date with the latest child development research and early care and education best practices. This will include writing, and revising narrative content, preparing new or modifying existing activities, and updating materials as needed to ensure information remains relevant and accurate. Additionally, this position will be responsible for updating the DoDVLS to ensure that materials are accessible to both military-affiliated and public users by clarifying language, activities and policies relevant for military-affiliated and public users. This will include identifying improvement opportunities, updating current content, and writing new language and terminology in support of both groups. This position will also assist with website maintenance by finding and replacing broken links, updating relevant attachments, helping with minor grammatical edits, and responding to user comments regarding the content.
The DoDVLS Content Coordinator reports to the Director of the DoDVLS. The position is also an active team member and works closely with other Content Coordinators as well as Project Co-PI. This position will work with child, family, and youth programs serving the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps. This is an opportunity to build and maintain a training platform to better serve teachers, trainers, and program directors working in the military child-care system. This position will work from Bevis Hall on the university's West Campus.
In the first 60 to 90 days of employment, the successful candidate for this position will accomplish the following:
Develop a comprehensive understanding of college and university policies and procedures
Establish pivotal relationships within the DoDVLS client groups, college, and across the university's child development and research resource units
Develop an in-depth understanding of current DoDVLS content, and website, as well as relevant research which supports the program A long-term goal of this role is to maintain all DoDVLS website links to ensure an effective user experience.
The selected candidate for this position will have demonstrated success in several areas, including:
A Bachelor's Degree in an appropriate area or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Extensive experience working in early childhood development, childcare and preschool settings
Familiarity with national and state level policies and/or regulations, early learning standards, and evidence-based practices;
Ability to work collaboratively with a team that may include related Services personnel, project, local childcare programs and video staff. Skilled in using appropriate office automation technology and software such as Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel.
