Position Title: After-School Program Teacher/Curriculum Leader (Preschool and Kindergarten)

Reports to: Director of After-School Programs
The sense of neighborhood created on the campus from 3 to 6 p.m. is one that makes the Catlin Gabel After-School Program an excellent choice for many families. With teachers and teaching assistants to plan and supervise art projects, cooking capers, sports events, computer fun, and organized games, students have plenty to do. Because Catlin Gabel students come from all over the metro area, the program makes it possible for peers to participate in activities together just as they would as neighbors.
The After-School Program Teacher/Curriculum Leader is responsible for planning and leading activities for the After-School Program (2:50-6:00) for children in Preschool and Kindergarten in the Village classroom. Working hours are Monday-Friday, 1:30-6:00pm.
Design and implement program curriculum and activities, ensuring the activities are appropriate to the age, interest, and developmental level of children
Work collaboratively with after-school program teachers to set a curriculum calendar
Request and order supplies for the program as needed
Facilitate the upkeep of the Village classroom environment
Work with after-school program director and after-school teachers planning and implementing activities for All-Day Programs
Provide an inclusive, caring environment with respect to children’s individual differences
Maintain appropriate standards for children’s behavior using non-punitive methods that promote development of problem solving skills and support self-esteem
Provide careful and concentrated supervision of children to ensure safety and learning
Communicate effectively with parents regarding children and the program
Pursue professional learning opportunities, including 15 hours of professional development every year
Attend orientations, staff meetings, and training sessions if assigned
Attend All-Day programs and evening/weekend events, upon request
Maintain current Child Care Division Central Background Registry, Food Handler, CPR/First Aid certifications, and professional development hours in Oregon Registry Online (ORO)
The After-School Program (ASP) Teacher spends 20 hours a week, at least 2:00pm – 6:00pm, Monday through Friday on days when there are classes at Catlin Gabel. The ASP teacher will supervise students in the “Village” classroom, lead activities, supervise students on the playground, communicate on the phone or radio with ASP staff, interact with students and their families, and maintain the classroom environment. Occasionally there will be field trips.
The After-School Program Teacher has daily contact with children, parents, teachers, the Director of After-School Programs, the Head of the Beginning School, and After-School Program staff. Some interactions include confidential information.
AA in education or related field or equivalent combination of training and experience
Experience designing and implementing activities for children (Preschool-Kindergarten) in childcare and/or educational settings
Enrollment in Oregon Office of Child Care’s Central Background Registry
Ability to pass a criminal background check and drug screen
Food Handlers certificate and current CPR and First Aid certification
BA/BS or equivalent four-year degree in education
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
Knowledge of developmentally appropriate activities for children and knowledge of child development
Ability to create positive, professional relationships with parents, caregivers, and colleagues
Excellent conflict management skills
Cultural competency, ability to interact with a diverse array of people and foster inclusivity
Ability to work as a team member: The ability to problem-solve, compromise, collaborate, be flexible, and take direction when necessary
Computer Skills: Proficient with Word, Outlook, and Google Drive
Mobility sufficient to move about the campus and assure the safety of young children
Ability to communicate with children, colleagues, and families
The ability to occasionally lift 30-50 pounds and to accomplish frequent bending, squatting, stooping and kneeling
About Catlin Gabel School
Catlin Gabel School is a coeducational, independent day school located on 54 acres in the West Hills neighborhood of Portland, Oregon formed in 1957 by the merger of the Catlin Hillside School, which had been founded as Miss Catlin’s School in 1911, and the Gabel Country Day School, whose roots extend to 1859 with the founding of The Portland Academy.
