Founded in 1934, Green Acres School is one of the country’s leading progressive schools. Serving approximately 250 students in grades PK-8, the school occupies a 15-acre campus in North Bethesda, Maryland. Our school focuses on the development of the whole child through an academically challenging program that emphasizes interdisciplinary and experiential learning. Green Acres School offers a collegial work environment, competitive salaries, and a strong benefits package. Multiple buildings serve Lower School (PK-4) and Middle School (5-8) students; we value the outdoors for ourselves and for our students. Strong understanding of child development is essential for Green Acres teachers. An advanced degree in addition to significant experience with best practices in progressive education is strongly preferred.
Music Teacher, Grades 3-8 Green Acres School seeks a full-time and experienced teacher of music for grades 3 to 8. The music program asks students, individually and collaboratively, to read and to play music with a variety of instruments. Students play chimes, bell plates, and bells; they play recorders and Orff instruments; they learn to read musical notation and to identify musical symbols. Students also gain an appreciation for a variety of musical styles and cultural traditions from around the world. Older students have the opportunity to join instrument ensembles, sing in a choir, participate in a musical theater production, and learn guitar. Applicants should demonstrate experience in hands-on methods of instruction as well as in more traditional approaches to learning. Teachers use best practices in classroom management while building strong relationships with individual students. The expectation for professional collaboration is high, both to coordinate efforts as a teaching team and to build integrated cross-curricular units.
The successful application should be able to teach a variety of instruments, lead choral groups, and serve as artistic and musical director of a school-day musical theater production.
