St. Matthew’s Preschool, which offers vibrant and developmentally appropriate programs for children ages 2 through 5, is seeking a new Director. The Director oversees all aspects of the school’s educational mission, marketing and business operations. Responsibilities include:
Lead a team of 12 teachers, 4 specialty area teachers and cleaning staff.
Interview, hire and train new teachers and support staff
Observe teachers and advise on their classroom leadership, team collaboration, curriculum implementation, parent relationships and adherence to the mission of the Preschool
Share teaching responsibilities when staff members are out and alternate coverage is not available.
Work with staff to set individual goals and education plans
Conduct formal performance reviews and lead regular staff meetings
Identify personnel problems and take appropriate action as deemed necessary
Provide professional development opportunities for staff
Student Recruitment and Enrollment
Develop marketing, advertising and recruitment plans and materials as needed to maintain optimal school enrollment (assisted by Board volunteers)
Conduct tours for prospective families and organize all marketing and enrollment materials
Work with local newspaper to create special edition print ads 3 times a year.
Communication and Parent Relations
Author the monthly Parents’ Newsletter and other communications to parents as needed
Review teacher newsletters to parents and assist teachers in their communications with parents
Draft and disseminate year-end Parent Surveys (mid-year and year-end) and solicit feedback to continually improve the program
Maintain the Preschool website and other social media presence (Assisted by Board volunteer)
The St. Matthew’s Parish Community and Church Relations
Serve as liaison between the Preschool and the Church community, articulating priorities and concerns, and maintaining open and ongoing communication between the two
Advocate on behalf of the Preschool, ensuring it is a visible and vital ministry of the Parish
Provide information about the Preschool, including a brief monthly report, to the Preschool Board
Work effectively with the Church staff regarding scheduling of events, the physical plant and personnel
Prepare the annual operating budget (income and expenses), tuition plan and staff compensation plan (Assisted by the Preschool Board, Preschool Board Treasurer and bookkeeper)
Identify annual fundraising needs to the Preschool Board
Work with the Preschool Board Treasurer, Preschool Board Chair and Church Financial Secretary to monitor the Preschool’s bank accounts and provide information necessary to the Church’s annual audit.
Maintain an appropriate inventory of supplies and plan for equipment purchases and upgrades
Work collaboratively with the Church Property Committee and Preschool Board to identify and oversee Preschool property needs and capital improvement projects
Oversee the annual Preschool Calendar, schedule school fundraisers, community-building/social events
Serve as an organizational leader, maintaining professional relationships Preschool Board, Church Leadership and Staff. In so doing:
Attend Preschool events such as Back to School Night, Welcome cocktails, Spring Fundraiser and other scheduled fundraising or marketing activities as needed
Seek the expertise of other professionals and experts (including early childhood, social services and health professionals, St. Matthew’s clergy and staff, artists, psychologists and other early childhood experts) to enhance the quality of the Preschool and ensure the curriculum is adequately preparing its preschoolers for kindergarten through training and consultation
Ensure that child and teacher health documents are in order
Keep the school environment healthy, safe and secure
Review, update and oversee Emergency plans. Review plans with staff
Schedule training as required and/or as appropriate in topics such as Safety and Security, First Aid, CPR, Medication and Epi-pen administration
Ideally, candidates will have one (or more) of the following qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Early Childhood Education (ECE), Child Development or a related field (Master’s Degree is preferred.)
• At least three (3) credits in ECE administration (may be completed within one year of being hired)
• Three (3) to five (5) years of classroom teaching experience
• At least one (1) year of supervisory or program administration experience
Additional Salary Information: Salary will be commensurate with experience.

The St. Matthew’s Preschool (SMPS) in Bedford, New York offers a vibrant and developmentally appropriate early childhood program that addresses all areas of learning – social, spiritual, physical and intellectual - in a nurturing and supportive environment. The program, for children ages 2 through 5, also includes a variety of hands-on enrichment opportunities that take advantage of St. Matthew‘s renowned music programs, woodlands trails, facilities and other resources.The school, which consists of up to 60 students and 17 staff members, was founded in 2010 and is part of historic St. Matthew’s Church.
