Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is an independent coeducational, college preparatory day school serving grades Pre-Kindergarten (including 2 year olds) through grade 12. Founded in 1966, the school has a current enrollment of approximately 876 students and 180 employees located on our 100 acre Main campus or our three acre Harbour View campus, both in Suffolk, Virginia. Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is seeking an experienced professional to research, plan, manage and oversee all aspects of a relevant, stimulating and engaging Extended Day and Summer Camp Programs, serving both the Main and Harbour View campuses, which are developmentally appropriate for all age groups, and provide diverse learning opportunities for students throughout the school year.
Primary Extended Day Responsibilities
Supervise Extended Day coordinators and staff at the Main and Harbour View campuses;
Work effectively with faculty and staff in creating a warm and nurturing atmosphere for students;
Interview and contract with local vendors to teach a variety of extracurricular classes;
Collaborate with the Director of Communications to provide parents with information on Extended Day programming through the creation of a brochure, maintenance of webpage, and email communications;
Act as a liaison for the program, navigating between students, parents, vendors and faculty;
Receive and maintain all records for students, monitor numbers and ratios to arrange for adequate staffing and space to ensure compliance with all Department of Social Services standards;
Prepare staff and parent handbooks for Extended Day and Summer Programs;
Manage budget, plan and purchase supplies, process staff payroll and coordinate billing with Business Office;
Manage all Extended Day employees, secure and schedule substitutes; and
Be present during the hours of 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. (Monday – Friday) during the school year.
Primary Summer Programs Responsibilities
Supervise and direct all Summer Camp staff;
Create a well-balanced Summer Camp schedule with classes for all ages (Pre-K – Grade 12);
Produce a Summer Camp brochure as well as other marketing materials with the help of the Director of Communications to advertise the Summer Camp Program to the school and to the wider community;
Organize the purchase of supplies, t-shirts, lunch options, and advertising materials;
Be an active presence during Summer Camp participating in carpool, leading gathering times, problem-solving, and gathering material to use in next year’s marketing efforts;
Continued to expand the Summer Camp Programs, working with administrators and the school to grow the program to meet the needs of the students;
Oversee all facets of Summer Programs, facilitate enrollment of campers, serve as primary source of communication with parents, assist in monitoring campers throughout each day;
Work closely with the Director of Communications and the Office of Admissions to promote the School through positive public relations and marketing before and during camp;
Assist in camp setup the week prior to camp’s opening, prepare necessary records for weekly field trips, assist in logistical arrangement for field trips including securing contracts and payment, maintain staff records for payroll and submit to Business Office;
Provide orientation and training for all summer camp counselors and teachers; and
Be present during the hours of 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (Monday - Friday).
A bachelor’s degree in education or recreation management.
5 – 10 years experience working at a school, camp or similar setting.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, G Suite, PowerPoint and web-based tools. InDesign experience preferred.
Management experience with planning, budgeting, staffing, leading and motivating staff members.
Candidates should be certified in First Aid/CPR/AED/MAT/Diabetes Medication Administration.
Demonstrated success in working with children of all ages.
Detail oriented and highly organized.
Working knowledge of Virginia Department of Social Services licensing regulations and requirements for Extended Day and Summer Camp Programs.
Understanding of child development and developmentally appropriate practices for children of all ages.
Possess an interest in ongoing improvement and problem solving.
Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines while dealing with campers, parents, staff and the School’s administration.
Ability to collaborate with Division Heads and other faculty and staff.
