Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Mental Health Specialist III for the Child & Adolescent Services – Children’s Transitional Residence at Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care. Reports to Program Coordinator.
Provides daily care and supervision to children residing in the Children's Transitional Residence. Participates as a member of a milieu treatment team in carrying out a residential mental health care program and related services to children (ages 5-11 years) at CTR. Demonstrates competence in recognizing the unique needs and behaviors of children.
Takes initiative in engaging children and families in a tactful manner, as observed by supervisor and as indicated by feedback from patients and team members.
Establishes and maintains appropriate boundaries and sets limits while avoiding power struggles with children (ages 5-11 years), as indicated by feedback from team members and by supervisor's observation.
Follows Center policies and Unit guidelines for restraining children (ages 5-11 years), as indicated by feedback from patients, team members and supervisor.
Deals appropriately with issues of loss, separation, power, alliance, boundaries, authority and identity with children (ages 5-11 years) and their families, as indicated by feedback from team members and by supervisory review.
Assesses children's (ages 5-11 years) interpersonal behavior, participation and interest in their environment in accordance with established Center policies as monitored by supervisor.
Plans and implements appropriate and therapeutically effective milieu therapy activities for children (ages 5-11 years) as indicated by feedback from team members and by supervisory review.
Documents assessments, interventions and interactions with children in accordance with Unit policies as reviewed by supervisor.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires three years of related/relevant experience in the mental health/behavioral health/children's services area, or 2 years completed in college in a related field.
Individuals employed in the Day School must have 60 college credits in child development education or related field, as required by Department of Education regulation for substitute teachers.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Employee must be physically active and be on feet most of day. Duties may involve bending and lifting objects up to 25 lbs., running and playing active games with children and adolescents (ages 5-11 years) and driving minivans or other vehicles. Once employee completes training, they must be physically capable of safely providing personal restraints to agitated children (ages 5-11 years).
The work environment is crowded and moderately noisy with children and staff moving about.
