The School Program at the Lawrence Hall of Science provides in-house and outreach programs for schools throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. Programs model best practices in science teaching based on current research in teaching and learning and the vision laid out in the Next Generation Science Standards. We offer 60- and 75-minute workshops on a range of science topics across the science disciplines, as well as large group programs in the form of themed hands-on science festivals and assemblies. The School Program serves public and private schools TK-12, homeschool groups, and preschool-aged learners. We are the largest provider of in-house and outreach programming in the Bay Area, serving over 190,000 children annually.
OVERVIEW: This position involves planning, implementing, and presenting educational programs that enhance the public?s and diverse school and homeschool group?s understanding of STEM disciplines, as well as support teachers? understanding of effective science pedagogy. The Museum Educator 2 (ME2) also develops and presents educational programs for use inside and outside of the museum, especially Science Shows and Festivals for large groups of up to 400 people. ME2s may coordinate volunteers and/or docents.
?Deliver in-house and outreach museum education programming (includes classroom setup, cleanup and travel), adapting program and materials to meet the needs of specific groups. ?Engage in professional learning activities to support professional growth. ?May assist with development of new educational programs and training/mentoring of other educational staff. ?Under general supervision, arranges learning materials and spaces including organizing and requesting supplies. ?Provide work direction to volunteers and undergraduate student assistants. ?Document program evaluations and makes recommendations for improvements.?Working knowledge of educational program content, developmentally appropriate practices, and effective pedagogy. ?Working educational programs delivery and management skills, including training adult volunteers to help facilitate program activities with students and families. ?Possess effective reading, verbal, and written communication skills. ?Possess effective verbal presentation and public speaking skills, especially to large groups of up to 400 people, both children and adults (e.g., children's or adult theatre, trade shows, conventions, conferences, outdoor events, etc.) ?Ability to vocally project for up to 400 people without amplification, including in acoustically challenging spaces such as gyms and cafeterias; as well as sustain voice, energy, and enthusiasm for up to three 50-minute programs ?Possess the ability to establish rapport with diverse students and create an inclusive and engaging learning environment for all. ?Possess a positive public service attitude. ?Possess a commitment to teamwork?contributes to achieving group goals; supports team?s efforts to succeed; balances team and individual responsibilities; willing to adjust schedules for the team; completes tasks on time; takes responsibility for own actions; reliable. ?Possess strong interpersonal skills?considers and responds appropriately to the needs and capabilities of different people in different situations; is tactful and treats others with respect; relates effectively to others when encountering difficult situations. ?Possess broad knowledge of basic science and math. ?Possess knowledge at a college level of some branch of math or science (chemistry, physics, Earth and/or space science preferred) and/or knowledge of educational techniques and child development. ?Computer Skills with business software systems in the completion of work assignments (for example, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint). ?Physical ability to pick up and carry crates (up to 50 pounds), and load/unload and move heavy carts. ?Comfortable with driving large cargo vans for distances of up to 4 hours. ?Ability to work evenings and weekends when needed. ?Ability to travel (including overnight stays in long-distance outreach destinations) when needed. This is a 1 year Contract Position.
